[opensuse] Alt+Shift for switching keyboard layout
Hello list users: How could I set my desktop to use Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift combination for switching the keyboard layout? I have openSUSE 10.3 with kde 3.5.7 "release 72.4". Currently Ctrl+Alt+K does the job but I don't like that I have to press 3 buttons. TIA, IG ________________________________________________________ Ismerkedsz? Vizsgára készülsz? Mindezt a neten? Hi Istvan,
the method I use is as follows
Go to your KDE control centre, keyboard layout
In xkb_options, select "enable xkb options" and "alt+shift change
layout", click apply
Then go to "keyboard shortcuts", select "switch to next keyboard
layout", select "custom shortcut" and press "alt-shift". If everything
went correctly with xkb options, this will show up as ISO_next_group
and will work for changing layouts.

Thanks. I followed your instructions. Enabled "Alt+Shift change layout" option in Keyboard Layout/Xkb options. Next I changed the shortcut for "Switch to next keyboard layout" action in Keyboard shortcuts. When I clicked Alt+Shift I got "Alt+ISO_Prev_Group" instead of "ISO_next_group". I clicked apply, logged out and in. Alt+Shift has no action, it does not work. Any idea? Thanks, IG ________________________________________________________ Ismerkedsz? Vizsgára készülsz? Not sure what happens with KDE settings, it did not work to me some years ago so I'm always using SaX2 to configure keyboard layout and switching. In SaX2 select keyboard and go to "Options" tab. You can select more than one option (I'm using Alt-Shift for keyboards without "Win" keys and both Left-Win and Right-Win when there are "Win" keys). I also use Scroll LED to indicate the alternative layout. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks Mark, but this does not work for me either. I even turned off keyboard switching in kde control center. On my system KDE "Personal settings"->"Regional & Accessibility"->"Keyboard layout" has everything unchecked (even "enable keyboard layout"). That is I define layouts in SaX2 also. Hello Mars: I turned off keyboard layouts completely in kde. I had to adjust keyboard type too in sax2. Now it works, even the light for the alternative keyboard (though I liked better the flag in kde system tray). Thanks a lot! IG Papírképek akár ingyen! Hmm... It used to work for me, but I see now that it doesn't. The only option that still does is "two shifts together change layout" -- which just happens to be my preferred method of switching... You can try if it would work for you (check "clear old xkb options" to make sure that the old setting does not interfere). I don't know how to make it with either ctrl or alt, though, sorry. Looks like something else in KDE is re-mapping those, but I cannot find out what at the moment. Myrosia

Sure, but before you do all of that, check YaST. That should already be keyboard system default for keyboard group switching, which is probably simpler (like Alt-LeftShift) YaST => Hardware => Keyboard Layout => Options -> Group Shit/Lock Behavior -> choose the option you want here for system (all users) default. This has nothing to do with kde switching mode. More accurately this method works only if kde layouts are disbaled as kde settings overrules these yast settings (at least this is what the kde manual says).

I know this. It just does not work with the ALT+SHIFT combination. Now I have the feeling that you haven't tested it and just gave advise based on what is expected to occur. Would be nice if you could confirm that ALT+SHIFT works on your system. Did you TRY IT??? Because it works for me. And has done so reliably for years. I wouldn't write something so specific if I did not know for a fact that it actually does work.

If you want ALT-SHIFT, then use the YaST solution which you blew off. I know it works because THAT IS WHAT I USE.
Now I have the feeling that you haven't tested it and just gave advise based on what is expected to occur.
Bullshit.
Would be nice if you could confirm that ALT+SHIFT works on your system.
I use it every time I want to type in Russian. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I can use the yast settings. And it works. But only if the keyboard layouts in kde are disabled. In this case there is no language flag in the system tray however, which I don't like.

Bullshit. I don't get why you're rude. My understanding was that you could set ALT+SHIFT in kde (as that was my question about). I see know that you did not mean that.

And please explain why this combination does not work in kde and work in yast (if you know the reason). Setting it in YaST works in KDE, and has worked for YEARS. Or maybe you've found another KDE 4 bug????

I have no clue. I'm not a KDE or YaST developer. I've never seen the code, and even if I had, I doubt I would understand even 1% of it.
Thanks, IG

It works even if the kde layouts are enabled. But it does not change the flag, which is bad. I was looking for years a solution for this problem, but ... after all, as I less and less touch windows, and I do not need to switch layouts there, I get used to ctrl-alt-K combination :) Cheers -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

AFAIK, yast uses X specific layout extensions or whatever, while kde handles it by its own. ANd the dialog to set shtorcut combinations in kde does not support only "control" keys combos. This is something the kde developers should answer. You can check their bugzilla and file a case there. Or if this is existing case, you can vote for it to increase the visibility.
