KDE2: blank desktop for root
As a result of recovering from a messed-up 7.1 system, my KDE2 desktop for root is blank. Nothing on it, not even the icon bar at the bottom. I get the startup sound, and I can get out with Ctl-Alt-Del, but I can't do anything while I'm there. Any suggestions as to how to reinitialize it? My user desktop is more or less OK (except for the lack of sound). Paul Abrahams

Goto single user mode and run SuSEconfig. It has worked for me in the past for problems like you describe. Mark

I tried it and it didn't help. Why did you think that it would make a difference running SuSEconfig in single-user mode versus just running it in normal mode as root? Paul Abrahams
Any word on when there might be a fix for the remote exploit announced on securityfocus? - Herman
Search in Announcements for XNTP on www.securityfocus.com produces no results. What are talking about? Am I missing something from your message? -Kastus On Thu, Apr 05, 2001 at 04:03:19PM -0700, Herman Knief wrote:

It's there now -- go to ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/ -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. P. J.
Gotcha! Thank you Martin. There is other thing I'm puzzled with. Why is xntp-4.0.99f-34.i386.rpm (for 7.1) 406,408 bytes and xntp-4.0.98d-1.i386.rpm (for 6.3) 3,808,660 bytes in size? What's that big missing in 4.0.99 which was in 4.0.98? -Kastus On Fri, Apr 06, 2001 at 12:59:38PM -0700, Mads Martin J?rgensen wrote:

Because SuSEconfig will restore some things that won't get read until you restart X/KDE. Mark
