SuSE, win-98 and win-2000 in the same machine?
Hi Has anyone done this before: Laptop with pre-installed win-98. We want to add SuSE 7.3 and win-2000, and be able to boot them (LILO?) all from HD. Is this possible, and if it is, what is the installation sequence? Jaska.

See System Commander. Once upon a time (6.2 vintage) Suse US used to sell this too. ref: http://www.v-com.com/product/sc2_oses.html Best Chris H.

This depends on which OS. Win98 wants to be on the first partition, so installing it first is okay, and then linux. I recently installed WinXP and linux, and I actually installed linux first. WinXP now allows you to choose which partition to install to. I thinks Win2000 also allows this, but don't quote me.

Hi This sound very promising! Does anyone knows if win-2000 can be installed to an existing empty partition, that I would create with Linux? Jaska. Viestissä Perjantai 21. Joulukuuta 2001 21:09, Jesse Marlin kirjoitti:

Hi
This sound very promising!
Does anyone knows if win-2000 can be installed to an existing empty partition, that I would create with Linux?
Jaska. Probably so. Boot from the Win2K installation CD (not one of the vendor-dependent recovery CD's). When you get to that point, don't "upgrade" (which would wipe out your W98) but do a "clean" installation. Identify the target partition, delete it, and hope that the 2K installer is able to reformat (NTFS preferable). Win2K will (presumably) install its boot loader on the W98 partition, and in MBR, thus wiping out LILO or grub if they are located there. You then use your linux boot floppy to get back to linux. Either move your LILO or grub to your /boot partition and copy it to W98 (dd if=/dev/ of=/windows/c/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1), or set up LILO or grub with the option to boot to the Windows boot

Install or follow this steps: a. win98 (your existing OS) or install first, format the harddisk to at least three partition of however size you want; b. win2k, no need to be the first partition, use NTFS only if your win98 don't need to read info from win2k partition; c. Linux, use whatever remaining space on harddisk, sub-divide to /boot, /home, / and swap (4 partitions) if possible. Install lilo at MBR and you will see all the three OS, I have done win98/2k/RH7.1/SuSE7.3 all in one harddisk (60GB) and all work fine so fine. Be careful when fdisk your harddisk and divide the space carefully, it can be very confusing. Good luck. Dennis/sg

This is absolutely no problem. I'm everything but a programmer, and rather new on linux, but always trying all the tricks. This way I go independently w95, w311 and linux on my PC. W95, indeed, if You leave w311/dos622 as such partition on yr HDD, will update it. The way to f..k MS is easy : from yr SuSE DVD/CD, boot Yr PC/laptop. Go to partitionning and discribe all the primary partitions (up to 4) as linux native (a part from keeping one small, dim 15, for Yrlinux swap), - even those with another MS OS yet on board -, except that one which You want to make a specific MS partition (in Yr case w2000 or w98). This one, keep it as DOS or FAT32/W9x. Don't go further formatting !!! Just make them respectively recognizable by their intended OS !! Reboot the PC/laptop and start with the setup MS CD OS Yu intend to install. Install it. MS will only recognize the MS format partition Yu want to be used for the installation. You want to do the same, with another MS OS ? Ok, start again with the SuSE CD, go to partitionning, describe the OS Yu just installed as Linux native, and make a free linux native partition DOS/FAT32 again. Reboot and install Yr other MS OS. Reboot and install linux (if not yet installed), by the way, when in the partitionning install chapter, make all the partitions where Yu installed MS OS's DOS/FAT32 again and, once installed linux, configure LILLO, and it is done. You various MS OS's will not recognize each other, neither linux, but linux will see them all. Of course, when booting a MS OS, if formerly Yu booted another one, since the active DOS partition changes, Yu are asked to cfm Yr acceptance for this. just type Y (for yes). The description as linux or as DOS/FAT32 doesn't reformat Yr datas so Yu nothing loose that way. Yu can describe the partitions as linux and then dos or dos and then linux and back without any dammage. Above system is even valid with NO linux on board !!! Just MS OS's and LILLO on board works !!! And, ... by the way, Yu f..k MS,which is the most pleasant in allthat,... Jesse Marlin wrote:
