Software to Extract Data from Corrupted HDD??
Have dual boot (98&SuSE7.3) AMD K6 with 30GB IBM 7200 rpm HDD. Corrupted data on the HDD prevents me from gaining access to it by any means I have. IBM tech support (to whom I talked) has a DOS program to do a check. It confirms the corruption. All IBM recommends is to zero (literally) it out or get professional help. Their DOS program has a utility to reformat with zeroes! Do any of you know of a program which might crack this open?? There must be some thing since the professional data recoverers do it?? The cost of professional assistance is too high for me! Regards, Bob

If it's a scsi disk your controller's firmware can probably do this, otherwise something like dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdx will fill the disk with nuls. -- -ckm

No No No! He's looking for a way to extract the damaged data, not for a way to finish it off. WARNING to the original poster: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdx will pretty much permanently destroy your data.

He said the the IBM tech told him to run some dos tool that replaces what's left of the filesystem with zeros; that's exactly what the dd does...see the quote above. -- -ckm
Thanks to all who responded. Yes I am looking for a way to extract the damaged data, not for a way to finish it off. As I explained IBM program has finish off capability which is part of their test disk. Have tried the Ontrack Data Recovery system and their boot disk hangs and won't read the HDD. Will call Spinrite when they open (on West Coast) to see if they can help. Spinrite only claims to work on FAT partitions, but that is what went bad so if I can get FAT working I may be able to boot SuSE. And will also check out the LJ article Mr Bersten referred to.
