[opensuse] Diagnosing and Debugging Audio Problems (11.1)
Hi, I have an odd situation on one of my 11.1 systems. The problem is very isolated and specific: Audio from the Flash plug-in in Firefox cannot be heard. All other sources of audio work as expected. So far the only indication of what's going on I can find is that the PulseAudio Volume Meter shows the sound (instantaneous levels) on "Null Output". The PulseAudio Manager shows "Default Sink: auto_null" What might this mean? How might I get the Flash plug-in to use something other than what I'm guessing is an audio bit-bucket output destination? I ran into this problem myself after a recent update - I just deleted pulseaudio, and now it's working fine. Thanks. So, you just remove all the various PulseAudio packages? Do you install something in its place? Enlightenment? By the way, another symptom I didn't mention that's less an issue for me is that microphone input also seems not to get through to applications. Neither Skype nor Second Life voice get microphone input.

Just removed the main pulseaudio package (it autoselected the other packages IIRC). Didn't have to install anything else - apps that were using pulse just fell back on ALSA or OSS as near as I can tell.

That's something I haven't played with a lot myself - though last time I used Skype, I didn't have any problems. You might check the mixer control and make sure the mic isn't muted - that's an easy one to miss. Check your mixer settings. Depending on your card, you may need to adjust more than one thing. For instance, my old SoundBlaster card has a fairly complicated mixer set and to record from my mic, I have to make sure that "Mic Select" has "Mic1", the mic slider is not muted *but* has "Capture" underneath it checked, and that the special "Capture" slider has "Capture" checked. (Yes, that last part is a bit confusing.) Then check your volume levels (Skype will automatically adjust the "Capture" volume for me, so I leave it at 0, but I make sure to have the mic volume where I like it) and you should be good to go. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I was having the same trouble with now sound and now it's back. An earlier thread pointed me to alsa-info.sh which pulls a bunch of sound info I checked sound in yast and it was working again after. Pulse audio is enabled. No updates related to sound that I can recall, but I did reinstall ltsp. Maybe rerunning Suseconfig. I agree that removing Pulsaudiwoes is a quick and easy fix to audio problems. After a recent re-installation of my main machine due to an imminent hard drive failure, Pulseaudio started acting up. Sometimes I would not have sound for window manager events, sometimes there would be no sound in wine, sometimes there would be only partial sound, ultra fast sound, skipping sound... It drove me mad. Stopping and starting Pulseaudio sometimes fixed it, sometimes caused other, equally interesting effects. I don't want to dick around with an unpredictable beast like PA. I want my sound to work, period. Last night, I was fed up with playing around with PA and removed it completely, except for libpulse, which too many other packages depend on. In its place, Yast automatically wanted to install esound. I accepted that change and in a flash, all my audio problems were solved, though I had to reconfigure some apps, such as Skype. But that was painless and easy and my sound works brilliantly now.
