TB asking for the password is surely asking you to provide the password which will access your imap account at your ISP/whatever.

Don't know....but I am getting the feeling that you have accidentally
set a Master Password - simply by hitting <Return> even - and have
forgotten about it :-) .
Why not just start from scratch: start the new TB 3.0b and set it up for
all your needs. Once done, THEN copy over the
~/.thunderbird/<xyz>.default directory with all its files across to the
new installation? (You'll probably also need to adjust any "pointers" to
the name of the
participants (2)
