Some suggestions:
- Kill and restart kde-desktop process:
kill -HUP <kdesktop-pid>
kdesktop
- Update KDE
Regarding your 9.2 problems. Any error messages from /var/log/messages to
report? When you run 'top', do you have any processes that consumes a lot of
CPU or RAM? Have you checked for hardware errors by running Knoppix?

Hi .. any restart of KDE just puts the icons back how KDE wants them which definatley is NOT how i want them on all versions of suse/kde prior to 9.2 this was never a problem they stayed how i set them but now on 9.2 yea well nuff said Re the problems of speed ect exactly the same hardware is perfect under 9.1 if i swap the drives over put the 9.1 drive back as master and reboot on 9.1 there is simply no problem but 9.2 Hummmm once again nuff said i get loads of ZN+ pts/1 normally about 30 of them before the whole thing slows to a standstill i have found that the powersaved prog was causing a bit if trouble it has very marginally improved since i stopped that loading and also the latest version of skype seems a little suspect but only to a small degree it still goes legs up after a while pete. PS there is nothing of worth in var/log/messages just the cron stuff -- Linux user No: 256242 Machine No: 139931 G6NJR Pete also MSA registered "Quinton 11" A Linux Only area Happy bug hunting M$ clan, The time is here to FORGET that M$ Corp ever existed the world does not NEED M$ Corp the world has NO USE for M$ Corp it is time to END M$ Corp , Play time is over folks time for action approaches at an alarming pace the death knell for M$ Copr has been sounded . "Tappy?" Right-click on the desktop, then: Icons -> Sort Icons -> ... Select and / or de-select the options do and do not want as far as icon positioning and ordering are concerned. This is nothing new to 9.2, though the default may have changed.

This is nothing new to 9.2, though the default may have changed. Also check to see if SuseWatcher is set to start automagically, it moved icons around all over the place in 9.1 IF it's in your panel it will move stuff around. As long as you do regular checks for security updates it doesn't need to be running, since it's job mainly is to check when you are online if

2 suggestions. 1: make sure you are starting with an empty session, i.e Control Center>KDE Components>Session Manager>Start with an empty session. 2: delete/move to trash your kwin config files in your ~/.kde/share/config/kwin* and logout and then back in. HTH. BTW, wouldn't it be easier to create a new user and get the kde settings to work like you want, or mv your whole .kde directory and start fresh, than to reinstall 9.1? I also assume you have installed the kde 3.3.1 update to 9.2. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

creating an empty session makes not the silghtest differance at all the darn icons still do not do what I want them to but what KDE/Suse want them to whic is not my idea of desktop configuration it is updated to the latest KDE updates 3.3.1 makes no change .. One thing most definatley OFF the list is reinstalling 9.2 it took days to get it to install and untill i get issued with a new install disc by Suse it will not be tryed again no thanks . i actually had to start a windBloZe install and crash it out to even get 9.2 to consider installing at all and i sent the M$ Corp packing after i blagged use of it . Don't know if it is the same problem or not, but at least similar. I check Icons -> Align to Grid and set up my icons the way I want them. On logging back in, they were moved around. I set them up again and unchecked 'Align to grid'. So far they have survived restarts. Hope that helps Doug

I witness a kind of creep when "Align to Grid" is enabled, so I use it only transiently on the unusual occasion that I add to or rearrange my desktop icons. Then I'll turn it on to get everything lined up and turn it back off immediately. Otherwise, the icons march ever upward on the screen, it seems.
I set them up again and unchecked 'Align to grid'.
So far they have survived restarts.
Hope that helps Doug
