Hi all, I have a Radeon 7500 AGP card with SuSE 8.2 Pro, stock k_athlon kernel. It worked a charm when I installed, hardware 3D and everything. Today, for the first time in more than a month, I wanted to play a quick round of Tuxracer - slow as a dog. Somewhere along the line something broke, I suspect with a YOU update. I tried all the regular fixes, everything mentioned in the archives - sax2, switch2xf86_glx, updated to XFree86-server-4.3.0-63 with YOU, compiled a new vanilla kernel, ect. all to no avail. XFree logs tells me DRI is disabled because DRIscreeninit failed. Any ideas why? Here is the relevant sections from the logs, plus some output from 3Ddiag and glxinfo: (II) RADEON(0): [drm] drmSetBusid failed (6, PCI:1:0:0), Device or resource busy (EE) RADEON(0): DRIScreenInit failed. Hans, When this happened to me, I traced it down to a kernel update, using one of Mantel's 2.4.21 kernels. Up until this last one, the 2.4.21-64, 3D had a problem due to a bug in the 2.4.21 kernel, I believe, but the SuSE kernel 2.4.20-100 worked fine. Try to do a little detective work and go back to the last time that it worked. See what you have installed since then. I haven't found any of the YOU updates or KDE updates as causing any such problems. From your logs, it appears to me to be the same bug as direct rendering is off. That's how I found it at least, but reading /var/log/messages back to the last time it worked then checking the dates of files for what was installed about that same time. Pat -- --- KMail v1.5.3-3 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

That's exactly what I did - the only thing that changed since the last time it worked is that YOU did an update on XFree. Can't be a kernel bug (not on my hardware) since it did work before. I'm just trying to understand WHY it doesn't work - there has to be a reason Thanks Hans

It's not the XFree86 update, I can assure you as that has never misbehaved that I am aware of here. Have you tried a different kernel? When did it last work on your system? I tried a vanilla 2.4.21 to see if that would remedy it, but it didn't help. I'm back on the stock SuSE one. The only apps I installed in the meantime was MPlayer, lame and a few related media apps, a newer version of OpenOffice and Evolution packages from ulb. Nothing as far as I could tell that should break my graphics. The reason why I suspect it might be the XFree update, is because one of the packages was described as "libraries for XFree86" The DRI module seems be have some something to do with the libraries - I think it's named libdri, if I remember correctly. I'm baffled, really. I'll keep digging and keep you posted. Hans

I can imagine it is quite baffling, but you'll find it. The only thing I can think of again is to check your /var/log/messages to find the date & time it last worked for you and start your search from that. 9.6mb later... This is the only thing I found that is of any relevance. It looks exactly the same, all the way from the first boot to the last: Jun 29 18:39:14 sigaar kernel: Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann Jun 29 18:39:14 sigaar kernel: agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 203M Jun 29 18:39:14 sigaar kernel: agpgart: Detected Via Apollo Pro KT133 chipset Jun 29 18:39:14 sigaar kernel: agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xe0000000 Jun 29 18:39:14 sigaar kernel: [drm] AGP 0.99 aperture @ 0xe0000000 128MB Jun 29 18:39:14 sigaar kernel: [drm] Initialized radeon 1.7.0 20020828 on minor 0 The only thing that looks slightly out of place is the third line. My board has a KT133A chipset, not KT133. But I don't think this should make any difference. I'll keep digging... Thanks Hans
Bandipat, thanks for your efforts. Lots of scratching around and I still havent found the problem. But it magically sorted itself out (that or it just needed a reboot) and when I tried gears today it worked. Sort of. The framerates aren't what I expect, they're only about double what I used to get on a TNT2 Vanta 16mb. The gears are jerky, and I also notice that gears don't use 100% CPU like it used to. Card is a Powercolor Radeon 7500 with 128mb DDR. Hans, That looks satisfactory to me as I compare it to my 7200 I was using prior to the 9200 I have now. You still may not be getting the full use of your agp, but this should be nice for all your 3D stuff. Ben, I believe is running the 7500 or was, so he may be able to comment further on your results. Thanks, I looked it up and his post actually suggested about double what I get. But then, he might have a better card than mine, like a genuine ATi as opposed to my PowerColor. At least it works fine and tuxracer in 1024x768 runs at about 100 fps which is more than enough for me. I'm happy! :-) Thanks again Hans
