FYI: Games for Linux
Hello everyone, in the past I tried several times to find good games for Linux, which, although it gets better, is not taht easy. Especially if one is looking for Multiplayer games that work on Linux and Windows. I am not a big fan of Wine, as I could never get it to run reliably, which could be a user problem but anyway. By chance I discovered SuSE packages for a game similar to Command and Conquer, which runs on Linux, as well as Windows and can be played on the net. It's called netPanzer and aims more at the battle than the tactics. Packages can be found at: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.3-i386/RPMS.suser-scorot One can get missing libs from the 9.2 folder. I guess that most people already know the ID Software games like Quake etc. Ther is one game, where one does not even have to copy any level-files from the original CD. The game is an online ego-shooter and one can get it at: ftp://ftp.fu-berlin.de/pc/msdos/games/idgames/idgames/idstuff/et/linux If somebody knows more good games, please post them here, I'll put up an wiki-article to make it easier for people to find those games. Does anybody know by any chance of a game like Siedler (Settler?) or Anno 1503 for Linux? Sven

It's nothing like those, but don't forget nexuiz (www.nexuiz.com), an all GPL FPS game, similar to quake.

Thanks, I did not know about that one yet. It seems that it just got released in version 1.0. I added it to the wiki. http://www.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Games_for_Linux Sven
You know, I can never get Doom or UT to work on Linux. Or Quake even. It's sad. I can do a Kernel recompile on Morphine, and set up an FTP server, but getting Doom Wuake or Ut to work? Nope. After trying to install multiple times I gave up, I could never get past the screen that spashes for the game. It kind of makes me upset because those are the only games I play, I have the copies I bought and I download the Linux version follow along and nothing. Someone should do a CD with Quake, Doom and the DOS version of Wolfenstein and throw them on a CD that uses .sh scripts instead of .tar.gz or RPMs and has all dependencies for them all right there so someone like me can just type sh *.sh ;)

Someone did. They're called Id Software. Well, not the DOS version of wolfenstein perhaps, but if you get quake it is a .sh installer, with absolutely no dependencies beyond a working OpenGL installation

Where? They don't have it on their web page, and I sure can't find it on Google.

Quake, when you purchase the CD, installs with the shell installer. Fred -- "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!" Brought to you by the US Department of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act(s) numerous Presidential Directives, etc.

Don't know details about quake, but look here for doom3: http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/ I played it, it installs easily. You need to copy the .pak files from the CD. They might be inside .cab, you can extract from those with linux tools. Or copy the .pak files from a Windows Doom3 installation.

Pick the executable for your platform, for example if you're using a regular ix86 32 bit machine it would be nexuiz-linux-x86-glx (if you're using OpenGL, otherwise -sdl) and do chmod 755 nexuiz-linux-x86-glx and then simply ./nexuiz-linux-x86-glx The installation procedure obviously needs some more work

I have broadband (RoadRunner) and found it slower than a stump. Maybe it was just the servers I chose. It appears one can't play it locally like Doom. Fred -- "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!" I also found the binary to be very bumpy. Meaning that it was not very smooth on this 3G machine with Nvidia driver on a fx5200 card. -- 73 de Donn Washburn Hpage: " http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB Email: " n5xwb@hal-pc.org " 307 Savoy St. HAMs: " n5xwb@arrl.net " Sugar Land, TX 77478 BMW MOA #: 4146 - Ambassador LL# 1.281.242.3256 " http://counter.li.org " #279316

I guess you d/l a zip-archive? If so, you might have to d/l the game again, yet not as zip but installer from http://www.liflg.org/?catid=6&gameid=64. Sven

Neither do I! If it's not native to Linux, then I don't need it. Fred -- "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!" Brought to you by the US Department of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act(s) numerous Presidential Directives, etc.
