viewing Quicktime videos with Mplayer on Suse 10.0 does not work
started an new thread as it seems the other isn't quite the same situation (sorry for practically hijacking it) when trying to view http://www.boardsmag.com/screeningroom/commercials/2183 I am getting the "Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page." message. I've "reinstalled" the mplayerplug-in using the packman site packman.rsync.zmi.at. about:plugins reports at the very top that mplayerplug-in is installed and that it handles Quicktime format. copied mplayerplug-in.so to my plugins directory - although that doesn't appear in current instructions on how to use the plugin... steve@steve:~> ls .mozilla/plugins flashplayer.xpt libflashplayer.so mplayerplug-in.so what am I missing? I seem to remember being able to view movie clips in the past, when using 9.3. Since the clean install of 10.0, I haven't actually used Firefox and mplayer + mplayerplug-in yet. Now my system still wants to use Firefox 1.0.7 - I've installed 1.5 in my home directory and run it from there. If I click on the boardsmag.com link, 1.0.7 opens and the same Additional plugins msg appears as with the 1.5 version, could this possibly be an issue? also, is there an recommended place to search the suse-linux-e archives? Just subscribed this week and haven't found a decent place to search them from yet. TIA for any help Steve

It probably isn't the plugin now but rather the codec. Do you have the Win32 codec? -- kai www.perfectreign.com linux - genuine windows replacement part

reinstalled win32 codec's this morning and am still not able to view those videos, using cnn.com and the previous quicktime link to test. even tried deleting pluginreg.dat as someone else suggested in the other thread...still nothing. I've also already sent emails to the sites letting them in on the secret that not everybody in this world uses M$ software... will keep searching

I think the problem with X86_64 is that 64bit applications cannot use 32bit libraries like w32codecs. You could try installing the 32bit version of mplayer and it's dependencies, hopefully that will work. I don't think it is a "downgrade" as such, rather a different implementation. AFAIK, 64-bit is a long-way off from being used on the desktop. For now, unless you're running a server, stick with 32-bit. You'll be a lot happier. -- kai www.perfectreign.com linux - genuine windows replacement part

You are right, it works when you are connected through another provider. But when it is your provider you have other screens and they claim that you need : - Windows and not Linux or MacOS - Windows media player and nothing else - Internet explorer and nothing else !!!

I agree with you, I have two installations, the 32 bits one which is my working install and the 64 bits one for trials. But I can tell that all my equipment work with this install. At the present time I miss only mplayer in firefox. Michel.

linux - genuine windows replacement part The most dishartening thing to me is that packman *does* have 64 bit packages. foolish me, i dl'd all of them, alas, no joy w. firefox or mozilla or konq. Has *anyone * ever been able to run the 64 bit mplayer plug-in in firefox or mozilla or konq? if so, PLEASE let us know how you did it! As things stand now, i have to undo *everything* 64 bit and try the 32 bit firefox & mplayer & plugin. d.

Ok guys, it seems there might have been an update to Firefox and or Mozilla recently, because I too found that it could not play my video files. Konq is ok, because they do the intelligent thing and have it search all places plugins might be, but Mozilla & Firefox need their own. The solution? I reinstalled the mplayerplug-in, which installed all necessary plugins back to Mozilla & Firefox. Check "about:plugins" in either to verify! Lee

Hi Steve, I had problems with MPlayer/mplayerplug-in conflicting with both realplayer (10Gold) and mozplugger. My symptoms were identical to your's, IIRC. To fix it, I: a) uninstalled mozplugger: as root: rpm -e mozplugger SuSEconfig ldconfig (or use YaST) b) remove mplayerplug-in-rm.so from /usr/lib/browser-plugins c) remove mplayerplug-in-rm.xpt from /usr/lib/browser-plugins d) remove links to (b) from /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/plugins and /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins e) remove links to (c) from /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/components and /opt/mozilla/lib/components f) delete pluginreg.dat from ~/.mozilla (with Firefox closed) to force the re-registering of installed plugins. The underlying rationale is that MPlayer, mozplugger and realplayer are individually configured by their packagers to handle what, in situ, ends up being an overlapping range of media formats. This sometimes causes the different 'players' to contend with each other when an overlapped media format is encountered. I opted to 1) have realplayer handle it's native stuff... 2) eliminate mozplugger (I don't use Fixefox to open all those document types, anyway; that's what I use Konqueror for)... 3) have MPlayer/mplayerplug-in handle the Quicktime and Windows media stuff. Worth a try? (Easy enough to restore...) regards, - Carl

that sounds all sounds good to me. Never needed to open a realmedia format with firefox anyhow. Thanks for the info Carl. I may just give up until Suse 11. I dont need to view web based M$ stuff that bad anyway. Lesson learned (if any) is to not install everything under the sun "just because" (bad habit/hobby - gotta see if *that*, whatever it is, can be installed and works) - only install what is needed and just live with it.

OK, mozplugger isn't 'colliding' with other plugins, so that's one complication out of the way.
SuSEconfig ldconfig
ran both of those
These are run by YaST after you use it to install/remove packages. If you install/remove packages manually using command line rpm, then you need to run these commands afterwards. If mozplugger wasn't installed, meaning you didn't remove it, then running these two commands on their own accomplishes nothing... doesn't hurt anything, but the keystrokes and time consumed is a waste.
b) remove mplayerplug-in-rm.so from /usr/lib/browser-plugins c) remove mplayerplug-in-rm.xpt from /usr/lib/browser-plugins
did b and c
OK... You *do* realize this is only done to disable realmedia playback in Firefox via mplayerplug-in, right? IOW, you don't want both mplayerplug-in /and/ RealPlayer10 configured to handle the same resources.
d) remove links to (b) from /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/plugins and /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins e) remove links to (c) from /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/components and /opt/mozilla/lib/components
no links found in any of those locations
Then something is wrong with your installation... when you install mplayerplug-in, the installation should create links to those files in the /components and /plugins directories under /lib in /opt/mozilla and /opt/MozillaFirefox.
f) delete pluginreg.dat from ~/.mozilla (with Firefox closed) to force the re-registering of installed plugins.
did that again, 3rd or 4th time today LOL
When I was troubleshooting this on and off over a couple of weekends, I think I must have deleted pluginreg.dat at least two or three dozen times ;-)
that sounds all sounds good to me. Never needed to open a realmedia format with firefox anyhow.
I can click on practically any popular streaming media link in Firefox and view it. Realmedia plays in RealPlayer10, the 'doze stuff plays through mplayerplug-in and my .pls and .mp3 plays through xmms... and it all happens automagically now (after a great deal of time spent hammering it into shape)
Thanks for the info Carl. I may just give up until Suse 11. I dont need to view web based M$ stuff that bad anyway.
Don't give up, whatever you do... it is likely a small oversight. I've had this arrangement working the same way in 9.0, 9.2, 9.3 and even 10.0 so i know it can be done.
Lesson learned (if any) is to not install everything under the sun "just because" (bad habit/hobby - gotta see if *that*, whatever it is, can be installed and works) - only install what is needed and just live with it.

I copied [it] this morning ...from /home/steve/.mozilla/plugins/
Assuming this is your own system and you've installed a proper SUSE rpm version of Firefox, you really shouldn't have a plugins directory under ~/.mozilla This could pose a problem, as user-defined settings can override global defaults. If you don't mind losing settings (bookmarks, etc) you could delete ~/.mozilla and start with a fresh slate. An interim solution would be to temporarily move it to ~/.oldmoz so you can test the "repairs". (Normally, you want the plugins installed globally so every user account you create will have access to them... say, for instance, you by accident shred your existing user directory and need to create a new one... the globally installed plugins will work in your new digs.) <major snippage>

Of all the directories you listed, this is the only one that is correct. The links you'll be creating will point to these files, so at least there's less work for you ;-) You need to create the following links: In /opt/mozilla/lib/components and /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/components: mplayerplug-in-gmp.xpt mplayerplug-in-qt.xpt mplayerplug-in-wmp.xpt mplayerplug-in.xpt In /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins and /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/plugins: mplayerplug-in-gmp.so mplayerplug-in-qt.so mplayerplug-in-wmp.so mplayerplug-in.so In case you need coaching, I'll "get you started": From your desktop, open a shell and log in as su cd /opt/mozilla/lib/components ln -s /usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-gmp.xpt ln -s /usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-qt.xpt ... and so on, etc etc, changing into the appropriate directories... until all the links have been created. Then, exit out of su and exit the shell. Launch Firefox, verify all the plugins and associated media types are listed using "about:plugins", then test and let me know how things go. *if Firefox is creating a fresh ~/.mozilla, you don't even need to delete pluginreg.dat this time ;-) Good luck! - Carl

(Normally, you want the plugins installed globally so every user account you create will have access to them... say, for instance, you by accident shred your existing user directory and need to create a new one... the globally installed plugins will work in your new digs.)
thank you for the line by line instructions Carl! I did rename ~/.mozilla and will hopefully be able to pull out of there what I need. The "proper" SUSE rpm of Firefox, now showing version 1.0.6 (was 1.0.7, before the reinstall yesterday LOL) now works for this site which I believe was a Quicktime file; http://www.boardsmag.com/screeningroom/commercials/2183 however I cannot view video from www.cnn.com - no big lose there, but still odd. Firefox 1.5 doesn't work for either sites as I believe that was not a SUSE rpm. Then again, I never fully installed that, I left it just in my home directory. Is there anyway to use the latest Firefox or will I just have to wait till a rpm is created? Haven't looked lately for a official SUSE rpm either - my bad if there is one. I also prefer the idea of globally installed plugins, might have mixed and matched globally and locally in the past by mistake or not paying attention to detail. Thanks again for the help Steve

ugh, I don't always reply to myself... after sending that last reply, I ran an online update and Firefox was updated to 1.0.7 - and now the Quicktime site and cnn.com videos work. Would still like to upgrade to the latest Firefox if possible?!? with all the problems everybody has experienced, I am not going there without guidance thou! Thanks Steve

Glad to hear it all worked out! There's a lot of great stuff out there in the Real formats, too. You didn't mention it, but your RealPlayer10 plugins should now be working quite nicely in Firefox with no mplayerplug-in contentions. Have you tried them? Here's one of my favorite Real format sites: http://www.freespeech.org/fscm2/genx.php?name=featured_videos

No rush... 1.07 works great here. I usually wait for a regular packager (Packman, Guru, etc.) to post the new stuff before attempting to install it. If an .rpm isn't available yet, there's usually a reason and I can afford to be patient.

I and many others have repeatedly posted explanations and solutions to many plugins problems for Mozilla/Firefox/SUSE 9.0, 9.2, 9.3 and 10.0 ... all those posts are available in the SLE archives and most of them are still pretty relevant. In any case, after this experience, you really shouldn't need any more plugins guidance ;-) regards, - Carl

sorry about not searching the archives. I asked awhile back but it must have gotten overlooked, is there a preferred search link for the archives? so far what I have found doesn't appear to be easily searched; http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/ I remember awhile back on the Mandrake lists, someone had setup a web site that included a way to search their archives, just wondering if there is something better than the above link. Been a rough week, noticed too that my subject line is off topic... back to the drawing board! Thanks again Carl Steve

Here's my personal favorite... just scroll down to the 'distributions' category and click on 'suse-linux-e'. There are other SUSE lists archived there, too: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?w=2
Thanks again Carl Steve

Note that after simply installing mplayerplug-in as an rpm, it should work with Mozilla and Firefox, which is what it is intended for. Works fine here.
