I'm not sure where I first found that out. Probably initially when I was looking through packages to install the first time around. I most likely first became aware of what it was for by seeing messages on this list (thanks!).
However now get error saying cannot find Qt-1.4 (libraries). As best as I can tell I have 1.44. I created a sym-link (via kde superuser

This could be because updatedb doesn't always look in every directory - it only goes where it's allowed to (it depends upon which user it is run as).
still got same error message. Created a similar link for any other 1.44 versions I could find (mainly under i486-linux) and still no joy. It seems that I am not managing to get my links to show up (or that I am so far off base for that to be irrelevant - I am new to this game).
Right, this could be a case of installing more development libraries ;-) On my system I have the following qt packages (all from series 'x'): qtcompat qtdevel qtlib You've probably already got the qtlib package installed, but these are only the runtime libraries. To compile programs with qt, you need the qtdevel package (which have the devel libraries). Make sure you have at least these three packages installed. One other point - to get the best help, you should reply to the list as well, since it's unlikely that I'd know the answer to your question myself ;-)

what am I missing?
Are you sure you've got the 'xdevel' package (from series 'x') installed?
Anyway, your includes path looks a bit dodgy as well (although it's probably just a typo). On my system, the includes are in: /usr/X11R6/include

Try specifying the location of the qt libraries, like you did for the X includes. To see what options you can pass to 'configure' just look at it in a text viewer/editor (e.g. less).
