[opensuse] Nvidia compiz "freeze"
Hi everybody Since I installed compiz-fusion the screen freezes after the screensaver starts or when I go to a text-console (ctrl-alt-F2) and come back again. (mouse can be moved, but no action on click, cannot switch to text-console, have to shutdown and restart). I found a lot of threads in google from people having the same problem last year (mainly with ubuntu) , but I havn't found a solution... I use openSuse 10.3, have a Nvidia GForce TI 4200 with AGP8X, downloaded the driver last year from Nvidia (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.01-pkg1.run), which I found there under "Legacy" - but when I looked at the nvidia.com page today for a new driver release for that old card I could not find anything at all anymore... I don't think I could use the drivers offerend in Yast/Nvidia repository for that old card, no? Can you help? regards Daniel -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Switzerland professional photography: http://www.daniel-bauer.com erotic art photos: http://www.bauer-nudes.com/en/linux.html Madagascar special: http://www.fotograf-basel.ch/madagascar/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There should be an "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run" package available on the nvidia site, I downloaded it 30th Jan. Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In the short term choosing "Blank" screen as your screen saver may help. I have had this issue as well on an ATI card, so it isn't just nVidia specific. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Yes, I get it with ATI. I had to do a hard reboot. So I've given up on compiz. I guess what you've never had you'll never miss. Cheers Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I've seen the same exact behaviour with my NVidia Quadro NVS 140M card. Not all the screensavers tickle these freezes however. "Blank" is obviously the safest bet, but you might try experimenting a bit with a few of your favourites and narrow down the choice to just one (or possibly a random good one) amongst those that actually do work. --ted Peter Bradley said the following on 02/22/2008 12:57 PM:

Aah yes, but, once you _have_ had it, you _will_ miss it. I have found it well worth the time it takes me to resolve the issues and get it running. I am one that has never cared too much about which desktop I run before, but the compiz interface really makes managing multiple desktops and many more windows on the same desktop much more intuitive. Of course your preferences may be different, -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
