When I set up open Suse v 11.10 as a Newbie I somehow got all the icons on the desktop I wanted except for Thunderbird, It is there at the top left in the sidebar(windows) and in the Applications box. But it won't let me drag it to the desktop to keep it there. Can anyone help? Thanks. Hi Bob; First, why are you using openSuSE 11.10? That is very far out of date. Current release is 12.1. Strongly recommend you update to that (or even 11.4). Second, which desktop are you using (KDE, Gnome, xfce, other)? This will probably affect any user response. Always supply as much information as possible and let us wade through it. I can only tell you about KDE. If you use another desktop, someone else will have to help you. You say the icon is at the top left in the sidebar. Would it be possible for you to take a screenshot (ksnapshot) and paste it to an image storing service (pastebin, imagebam, etc.) so we can see what you are talking about? KDE puts the taskbar (sidebar?) on the bottom of the screen and Gnome at the top. If KDE, have you opened the Start > Applications > Internet > E-Mail > Thunderbird? Try right clicking on Thunderbird there and select "Add to Desktop". Did that place the icon on the desktop and does it work? I'm sure Gnome has a similar procedure. If not reply with the above information and we will try to provide more help. Hi I think it must be gnome (sidebar and Applications box?). I could drag tb from the 'applications box' to the desktop but had to rt-click > properties > permissions > check execute box to get it to run from there. Is that it? Lynn, it is gnome desktop and have version 12.1 now. At the top left corner is "activities" and clicking that opens a sidebar at the left with icons in it including tb. If you rt click anyone of them it gives 2 choices, new window and remove from favorites. Also clicking activities gives 2 more words at the top left, just to the right of "activities.": Windows and applications. The windows term doesn't do anything. It must be open and the application opens a whole box of icons and a list of places to go like internet, accessories, games, graphics etc. I can drag these icons to the desktop, including tb but as soon as you let go of the mouse button, the app opens up and the icon disappears. The top middle of the desktop is the date and time, and at the top right is the volume icon, and my name. Click my name and there's a menu including switch user, hibernate, system settings, power off. The right side and bottom have nothing at all. Just the desktop background, Hope this helps. But this _is_ rt-click-copying-and-pasting no? How about making a list of the icons you want, open /usr/share/applications, ctrl-click the ones in your list, rt-click copy on one of the selected ones the rt-click paste on the desktop. If you want drag drop for launchers you could try Cairo Dock which I know does it. Or maybe open another thread as to why we can't drag and drop either a launcher nor a .desktop file to the desktop?
