I have a server that I've upgraded from 9.2 to 9.3 As I only have a VGA monitor on the box I only want console access through the screen. However I do want to VNC/X11 onto the box hence I need to operate in runlevel 5. With 9.2 I used the "Displaymanager starts X server" paramemter set to no. This doesn't to work in 9.3 i.e. I can't stop the X server loading. I have manually run SuSEconfig and checked that it wasn't skipping any files that it thought I had changed. Any help would be appreciated. -- David Bottrill david@bottrill.org www.bottrill.org Registered Linux user number 330730 Internet SIP Phone: 1-747-244-2699

I don't have 9.3, so I can't check it, but I think you could just remove the S*xdm and K*xdm from your /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory (in 9.1 it's S15xdm, and K07xdm). Regards, Pieter

And if that's the answer, there's a corresponding GUI way to do it in YaST. Open the run-level editor (YaST -> System -> System Services (Runlevel)), switch to "Expert" mode with the radio button near the top, locate "xdm", which should show that its enabled for run-level 5 and deselect the level 5 check-box at the bottom.

In theory perhaps. In practice it's runlevel 3 plus a display manager. And suse's setup for remote logins require a display manager with xdmcp turned on

Any help would be appreciated. From a command line as root, edit the file, /etc/inittab Change the following line: # The default runlevel is defined here id:5:initdefault: to # The default runlevel is defined here id:3:initdefault:
OR, simply at the boot menu, type a 3 before you boot.

David clearly stated that he wants to continue to operate in run-level 5.

The format of kdmrc has changed, and YaST apparently hasn't kept up Edit /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and look for the line StaticServers=:0 and remove the :0 so it becomes StaticServers= Then find ReserveServer=:1,:2,:3,:4,:5 and clear that one as well. And then find ServerVTs=-7 and clear that one. Then find the [Xdmcp] section and make sure it has Enabled=true then restart kdm with rcxdm stop rcxdm start

Thanks, that was what was what I needed, just to prove the point I switched to runlevel 3 and that killed the remote desktop (VNC) login capability. Your fix for kdmrc worked a treat I now have a text console on the box and can VNC / remote X onto it as needed. I will probably be putting LTSP onto this box hence the need for remote X capability. David, did you sent suse feedback with the feedback form? http://www.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Faq Is it possible that you store the info in a wiki, e.g at: http://www.susewiki.org/ -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Just start at runlevel 3. You don't need X running to remotely use X programs. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge
