I assume linux-PRINTING only talks about printing. On http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=lexmark&model=X1270 the scanner is listed as unsupported.

If you need an all-in-one device for Linux buy it from a manufacturer who supports Linux. In particular regarding printers and all-in-one devices I like HP very much because it is one of the few printer manufacturers which do really support Linux, see http://hplip.sourceforge.net/ Carefully check http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/index.html in particular http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/unsupported.html It is crucial to have exact model names because small differences in model names can make big differences regarding support status. E.g. LaserJet 1018 and 1020 are not supported by newest HPLIP but LaserJet 1015 and 1022 are supported even by old HPLIP and Color LaserJet 2600 is not supported by newest HPLIP but Color LaserJet 2500 is supported even by old HPLIP and Color LaserJet 2605 is PostScript and doesn't require HPLIP at all. Similar with scanners: HP stand-alone scanners are not very well supported, see http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=hp in contrast to scanners in HP all-in-one devices, see http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/index.html By the way: Regarding plain printers from Lexmark there is a big difference if a Lexmark inkjet printer or a laser printer is used, see http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/LinuxSupportByPrint... "Lexmark Optra Division" versus "Lexmark JetPrinters". There is no native support for the lexmark x 1270, however go to the Lexmark site and you will probably find a Suse Linux driver in an .rpm format which means that the file will auto install from KDE Konqueror File Manager I can totally agree about HP Hardware - No matter what HP product you but for any O/S there will almost certainly be native support for HP. HP is highly committed to supply Linux drivers Scott Johannes Meixner wrote:

the HP listed by my 10.1 and the list of my dealer are not the same... so, changing for a simpler question: what cheap Hp all in one do you know works for sure? (price<$100 if possible) for example in this list :-() http://www.rueducommerce.fr/Peripheriques-Reseaux-wifi/77-Imprimante-Multifo... thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://gourmandises.orangeblog.fr/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

cite from Johannes' mail: Carefully check http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/index.html in particular http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/unsupported.html /cite Then it is up to you to find out which vendor sells them and how much they are. this is as difficult as hell... may I think than than nobody here have one cheap Hp printer working? I have been so often disapointed by internet assumptions... well, not directly cheap but greatly working for me since 2 years with b/w Laser, color scanner and fax, connected via ethernet AND: all of this working from Linux via hplip: HP Laserjet 3390. Also if you want to know WHO uses WHICH HP device successfully on Linux: Simply register with your mail address for the hplip Mailinglist at the hplip website.
I trust much direct users testimony.
Then you will love to read the "thankyou HP" mails on the aforementioned List. :-))
but if nobody can answer, I will try of my own...
Also a good way, if you find "supported" marked in the "supported devices list" for any feature that you need. kind regards Eberhard

well...I have an HP PSC that can't both use printer and scanner, one must choose :-( and this is for my 87 years old mom, 250 km away from me, so it must run easily :-( and it must be cheap... choosing is difficult. the infos are incomplete; for example I saw a cheap epson DX 4050. linuxprinting say "CX.. are good", but there are no cx on my store. Epson gives a linux driver for "4000" hopefully it's for all the 40XX sery, but who knows... thanks anyway jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://gourmandises.orangeblog.fr/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Sorry I really don't understand why an 87 year old user needs a scanner/copier/printer that uses very very expensive Ink Jet Technology. Depending on use, you could pay for a HP laser and scanner separate units in about 1 year. The new PSC devices are good, but running them could easily cost more than purchasing them. Its the Gillette Razor blade theory all over again where the consumables cost more than the initial units price. IF the user absolutely needs to print in colour you don't have any choice, however if the user needs only black and white a small relatively cheap HP Laser may work out 50 times cheaper in the long run. Just a thought Scott jdd wrote:
