[SLE] What could be wrong about setting up with cable-modem that *does not* uses DHCP
I just found out that my line somehow doesn't have DHCP. Hurray, now I could set up illegal servers! Anyways, I thought that setting this up could not get any easier, cause I just put in all the static values into the appropriate spot, but still the browsers are saying that they cannot locate to the host. When I have DHCP, Netscape gave me a problem about $SOCK_NS, but this time it doesn't. Any ideas? I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly, but if you're trying to set up, say, a web server on your system and you have a static IP then you can just put that IP in a URL such as http://123.45.67.89/ and feed that to your browser. Works fine here on my DSL link with a static IP. If you're unable to connect to systems OTHER than yours, then your network config is probably still mis-configured. In this case, see if you can use the "ping" command to reach various systems. Start by using numeric IPs rather than names and ping yourself first, then your ISP's gateway (if any), then your nameserver(s). If that all works, try ping-ing someplace like yahoo.com by name. Let us know if/where you run into problems. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Are you sure you're not confusing the server daemon dhcp with the client dhclient?? If you're using a cable modem you need the client. You're isp is running the dhcp server. Gerry On 26-Feb-00 Calyth wrote:

Sounds to me the DNS settings aren't in place. Can you ping by IP#? What does /etc/resolv.conf say?
