Hello SuSE folk, Recently did a new install of 9.2. After it finished I restored some of my old saved files, one of them being my Desktop settings. Of course that blew away My computer. Now I get a message every time I boot up. How do I get it back? Bob S.

OK, guys and gals, after re-reading my own message I guess I did not make myself very clear :-( I am talking about the My Computer icon on the desktop. The one that holds all of the drives. When I restored my desktop settings, because I had other stuff there that I wanted back, it replaced the 9.2 desktop settings and that erased/deleted?? the My computer icon. Want to get it back but can't figure out how. Leo, Message on logging in is: "Could not start process. Unable to create io slave. Klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'devices'" I assume that is the result of not being able to launch the devices in My Computer. Brana, Jerry & Carl Was running 8.2 with KDE 3.3. New clean install 9.2 with KDE 3.3 so some of the files were compatible. Knew about the change in user ID from 500 to 1000 so I changed that immediately. Sorry about the confusion guys. Bob S.

Try creating the following file ~/Desktop/myComputer.desktop with the following contents... [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Icon=mycomp Name=My Computer Name[de]=Arbeits-\nplatz Name[fr]=Poste de travail Name[hu]=Meghajtók Name[cs]=Můj počítač Type=Link URL=drives:/ -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989 SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please*

Ken, Sorry for the delay in responding. Had visitors at my home for a few days and was unable to get much computer time.Thanks, that recreated the "My Computer" file. Appreciate that. Sorry to say though the message I was receiving did not go away as expected. That was:
"Could not start process. Unable to create io slave. Klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'devices'"
Don't have any idea where to start with that one. Oh well, one step at a time I guess, but if anyone has ideas they would certainly be appreciated also. Again, thanks for all your time and trouble. Bob S.

Try checking the ownership of the Desktop files you copied over. Do you own them? Brana

A few years ago, I installed a versuion of SuSE that had a newer version of KDE. It updated my desktop settings. When I install, I have a separate /home file system, and I install into a new root file system so I can roll back to the old release. This made my KDE desktop unusable, and I had to use FVWM for a short time. You may have a similar problem where you restored the desktop settings from an older version or KDE (or GNOME). You might find that blowing away your desktop settings, KDE will restore them.

Sounds like a permissions issue. when I put 9.1 over 8.2 theuser numbering system was different. So I created my existing user which caused the system to search and find the existing folder in /home. I was then prompted to update the ownership and did so. Go in and in Yast try to add yourself to the system and see if it finds you. -- _______ _______ _______ __ / ____\ \ / / ____|_ _\ \ / / | | \ \ /\ / / (___ | | \ \ / / | | \ \/ \/ / \___ \ | | \ \/ / | |____ \ /\ / ____) |_| |_ \ / \_____| \/ \/ |_____/|_____| \/ | \ /|\ || |\ / |~~\ /~~\ /~~| //~~\ | \ / | \ || | X |__/| || |( `--. |__ | | \| \_/ / \ | \ \__/ \__| \\__/
CWIV, your sig is far too big, please trim it. In your post on the "My Computer gone" thread, you contributed eight lines of new text, with a sig of 12 lines! This is simply impolite (quite apart from the fact that you can't spell Linux apparently). Please read http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/S/sig-block.html and follow the MyQuary limit link as well. -- James Ogley james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://rubberturnip.org.uk Currently playing: Radio Five Live
