Patched SuSE kernel still incompatible with aic7xxx or fixed?
Hello! I have an Adaptec Utra160 SCSI card and I wonder if the following problem is solved with the SuSE version of the kernel. http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2002-Oct/3179.html http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2002-Oct/3600.html To summarize the issue, when using this kernel, the system totally hangs when loading both new or old version of the aic7xxx module. This forces you to use the manual install on an IDE drive. The only solution found by then to access the SCSI drives was to compile my own kernel. I wonder if this has been somehow solved since October of last year and if the 8.2 version doesn't have that issue anymore. Thank you for the info! Patrick

Strange... Are we all talking about the version 8.1 (seems I forgot to mention it)? Turning off APM seems a bit too radical for me to "solve" this issue. Turning off ACPI is still a work around but I think I did try it and some people in the links I gave mention they have done that. Is it possible to disable it at installation time? I will try this right now and come back with the results. Patrick
Dear Patrick, What hasn't been stressed enough on this list is that the kernel hackers are having problems getting their code completely bug-free and standard compliant when it comes APIC, ACPI & APM. The advice to try solving problems by turning one or more of these subsystems off isn't saying "You should not use XXX" but instead they are saying "The code in XXX is still not completely working and debugged". I have 2 SMP machines with SCSI (one is Adaptec) and following tha advice yielded 2 perfectly working systems (within reason). Good Luck.............. Here are the results! I tried the following boot options: acpi=off apm=off and apic=off. The problem is still present: a total freeze when I try to load the aic7xxx module with no parameter. I performed this using the following boot image (manual installation): ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/8.1/boot/boot.iso Any other suggestion? Thanks in advance! Patrick

I took 8.1 live eval and it frooze at the exact expected point. I then took 8.2 live eval and it worked perfectly with absolutely no boot parameter. This means that this issue has been fixed with release 8.2 for me. Thanks to the ones who tried to help me! Patrick

This means that this issue has been fixed with release 8.2 for me.
Unfortunately, this issue comes back with the installation of the security patch for the Athlon kernel (k_athlon 2.4.20-86). I can bring some more info about the issue and my config: - My root partition is on an IDE drive. - Starting the module aic7xxx at boot time (init.rd or boot.local) will fail. - Starting the module manually once the whole OS is up and running works just fine.
