Re: [SLE] SuSE 7.3 install with SiS 900 ethernet card won't work.
I have some of the info, but am unable to get peripherals to work. USB floppy doesn't work, so ixnay on the transferring text files to my computer so I can copy and paste into a reply. HP DeskJet with serial to USB converter doesn't print from "advanced editor" despite test page print working in YAST2, so I can't get the info out that way. I even moved back to latest kernel in SuSE 7.3, thought it could be a USB support issue, but no luck. Cheers, Brian PL O'Smith wrote:

Well, I think SuSE did find it. It was detected and the driver was installed. Plus, the SiS 900 was also detected in the other installs as well. It seems to me to be a driver issue. If it is, how does one go about diagnosing a driver in SuSE? BTW, I know from the Xandros install, that not only was the card detected and the driver installed, but it was also assumed that the driver was functioning, as the system tried pinging to determine if the connection was active. I don't know if SuSE does the same, but in both cases, the system has been unable to get a DNS assigned.

======================= Ok, Brian, I did just check and I do have the SiS900 as well and it has been flawless in it's operation. Check your /var/log/messages or boot messages to actually see if things are loading. Use the Control Centre to see if it is showing up there in the hardware scan. Just because SuSE sees it there, doesn't mean it's being activated. You may have to dig on this one a bit, but unless it has gone bad, it should work.
If dhcp is set up for the network, then yes, as it's booting it will ping and try to locate an IP address. The guy that installed my cable modem was absolutely amazed when I turned the computer on and it found everything so easy! He had only worked with Windows and that seldom goes as smoothly he commented.
I am not convinced yet that the port is activated or the network connection has been configured in YaST2 control centre.
