[opensuse] 13.1 boots after online update, but no login window - fixed
This posting reports a problem and a fix for 13.1 after a YaST Online Update. After the update I rebooted to see the screen decorated with the chameleon but no login window. I run 13.1 on a Dell Precision T7500 using the nvidia driver for the NVIDIA G73 [GeForce 7600 GS] graphics card. uname -a reports: Linux titan 3.12.53-40-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Feb 25 06:26:23 UTC 2016 (b2ce64e) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux /var/log/Xorg.0.log reports: [48.227] (II) LoadModule: "nvidia" [48.227] (II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/updates/drivers/nvidia_drv.so [48.301] (II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation" [48.301] compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0 [48.301] Module class: X.Org Video Driver [48.315] (EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module. The opensuse article "NVIDIA drivers no longer working after kernel update" for 13.2 at https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_troubleshooting#NVIDIA_drivers_no_longer_... says "If the NVIDIA drivers were installed on openSUSE 13.2 before the kernel was updated to 3.16.7-13-desktop, the driver may no longer work. This issue has now extended to 13.1 evergreen with todays (08.Mar.16) kernel update. (Linux 3.12.53-40-desktop openSUSE 13.1 (Bottle) (x86_64)
Likely the same as same symptoms and resolution:
After new kernel install booted to a default low screen resolution. When I booted back into previous 3.11 kernel all was well
Resolved by forced refresh of all installed NVIDIA drivers via YaST.
I choose Recovery Action 3 and attempted a forced refresh of installed NVIDIA drivers using YaST (the ">" option) nvidia-computeG02 nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop x11-video-nvidiaG02 xf86-video-nv I rebooted to see the login window. /var/log/Xorg.0.log now reports that module nvidia is correctly loaded. Problem solved. Roger

I run 13.1 with the nVidia driver on a laptop with a docking station and a second larger monitor mirroring the main display. After the recent 3.12 kernel update the second display could no longer be detected nor adjusted within KDE, then I found it was only booting to a console login. For the meantime I've defaulted to the previous 3.11 kernel in GRUB and that gets around the issue. I might be inclined to try your solution(s) were it not for the general instabilities I've noticed ever since that last official 13.1 update for systemd. This machine's been pretty much rock solid the last couple of years but in the last few weeks I've had kernel panics and other things going awry, and it all seemed to start with that patch. I was putting off the upgrade to Leap because Plasma 5.4 didn't have everything I needed but since the 5.5 update has landed I'll probably just have to bite the bullet. gumb -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

For you, and Roger, there is an Announcement msg which states that 13.1 has reached its EOL (February, last month). It may the time to think about upgrading to at least 13.2 which I know is rock-solid (I am using it) and this will give you time to have Leap of Faith prove itself in your mind before you then decide to upgrade to it. If you simply cannot let go of 13.1 then go the dual-boot way and install 13.2 while still using 13.1 (and if you go about setting this up the right way you can even use your13.1 files such as Thunderbird, Firefox, et al in 13.2 without major hassles). The same message says that support continues, but done by a community team instead of the core team. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. There have been a second patch to systemd that corrected most of the problems of the first patch, and another kernel update, that also works better. 3.12.53-40-desktop systemd-210-43.1.x86_64 - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
