[opensuse] PuTTY - Finally Proper Encoding for mc (and Vista SP2 on dual-boot boxes)
Guys, Thought I would drop a note about using PuTTY from win to connect to your suse linux box. One thing that has always been a pain is the line-drawing characters when using mc were always screwed up. You get A's with little circles over them instead of '|', etc. I knew it was encoding, but had never taken the time to find out which font/encoding combination would work because I don't spend enough time in windows to care. Stuck in windows this afternoon, I finally took the time to figure it out. The solution that works perfectly is to select 'Lucinda Console' as the font and set encoding (under the translation option) to UTF-8. mc is back to normal in PuTTY. P.S. For all those stuck unable to install Vista SP2 on a dual-boot suse/vista box, just pop the vista disk in, choose "Repair" and it will automatically identify the issue as not having a recovery partition correctly installed. Just choose repair and it will straighten out the partition issue and you will be able to install SP2. This does not effect your suse or grub setup and you will not have to reinstall grub after SP2 is installed. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
