[opensuse] How do I create a "launcher" icon for an application
I downloaded an application which runs from the command line but I want to create an icon for it so that I can launch it from the panel rather than type in heaps of characters in the RUN Command. In Windows I remember this was easy to do: simply right-click on the executable and select Create Shortcut on Desktop. But how does one do it in openSUSE/KDE4.7.3? Thanks for any suggestions. Have you tried: 1) Right click on desktop 2) Create new 3) Link to application -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks for this, James, but I think that this may have been the way in an earlier version of KDE but I am using 4.7.3. Along with the other suggestion that worked for you, you can get the behavior noted above by first doing the following. 1. Right click on desktop 2. Pick "Desktop Settings" 3. Change the "Layout" from "Desktop" to "Folder View" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I'm about that level too, having just installed openSUSE 12.1, where I verified that before I typed it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Which is what I did as well, before and after, your post - it ain't there :-) . (I wonder.....I have the workspaces set to Difference Widgets (or something like it) for each Workspace/Desktop and have 6 desktops each with its own wallpaper. I wonder if this setting for Workspaces is the reason? Dunno. Anyway, JC's instructions work.) It is the "Desktop Layout" v.s. "Folder View Layout" as explained in another message.... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I believe someone else pointed out the difference. I have my desktop set for folder view, where it does work. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I didn't know that, so my assumption, fortunately, was a lucky "strike" :-) . To the initiated this behaviour is called "a feature"; to all others it is "a bug" :-) . depends what type of desktop you're using: "folder view" or "default desktop." if in folder view, you can do exactly that, place icons to locations or applications wherever you like, straight on the desktop. if using standard desktop, you'll have to do that inside a 'folder view' plasma widget. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

. Right click on Kickoff button (Chameleon in lower left corner) and select Edit Applications . Use the Menu Editor app to create a menu item for your app . Click on kickoff button and navigate the menus to your shortcut . drag and drop the shortcut where you want it: desktop or launcher panel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
