The KDE 4 packages would continue to be updated with bulk fixes from Subversion until the end of May, and critical fixes through the RC cycle. So you'd be using what you had in your hand to sell what's coming next, not what you have in your hand.
Curious if anyone knows if the above decision was made and which way it went. For sanity's sake let us pray that 3.x is still the default and that 4.x is an option. It would be a pity for first time users to get caught by the numerous 4.x gotchas and give up on linux because "it just doesn't work". Sure an experienced user may be able to dig through ~/.kde/share/config/ and /opt/kdeX/ and recover, but this is far beyond what anyone wanting to "try" Novell openSuSE is capable of doing. After the 10.3 install issues and broken recover system, I sure would like to see 11.0 come out clean without any major gotchas... Surely Novell understands that. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. One can hope!! The last I looked at 4.0, (a few days ago) all the admin. stuff is missing....configurability is "gone, along with some other things!!" I do like plasma.....NICE effects! I just don't see 4.0 being ready for prime time by the end of June....UNfortunately. Fred -- MickySoft Aims to Lasso Everything With Live Mesh. 'Sure hope not! But, strange things have happened before.

Yep......it's more alpha code than beta, IMHO. I know that KUbuntu had hoped to release 8.04 with KDE 4.0, but realized that it wasn't a smart idea. They do have a release with it, but it's NOT a complete release of 4.0 by any stretch of anyone's imagination. ;) It works...for the most part, but certainly can't be used on any production box anywhere.
Ready My Aunt Fanny as like .

Like this: KDE 3.5.9 and KDE 4.0.4 are both offered in the installer with clear (I hope) text explaining the options available. There is no default preselected. KDE 3 and KDE 4 are coinstallable (unlike most other distros) and having made a choice at install time, you can install the other one afterwards and switch between the two until you get dizzy. That sound good for someone who loves KDE, would like to see what's new and improved in KDE 4 but is wary of burning bridges. And along those lines, what sort of settings / config compatibility issues might we expect if we do switch off between KDE 3 and KDE 4? Are the two wholly separate? A completely separate complement of applications and libraries using a completely non-overalapping set of configuration and settings files?

Just like now in 10.3, they are more or less completely separate. kde3 stores its config in .kde and kde4 in .kde4, and the applications are completely separate Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Right, there's a migration tool that copies your kde 3 settings in to .kde4 on first start of a kde 4 session. That means if you want to use KDE 4 apps under KDE 3 you either need to copy their settings and data by hand or login once to get the tool to run. There is no copy back in the other direction (too hard). Will
