Please define "the past" precisely. Which Linux version did you do it successfully with?

Highly likely you are. Is boot failure occurring while both master and clone remain present in the system? menu showing which kernel to boot, default or failsafe, yet the next screen shows;

That could be a misleading message. What might be happening is /dev/sda3 is an alias to two partitions with identical UUIDs - if both master and clone remain in system together. In recent and current kernel editions, real identities of storage devices are in the /dev/disk tree.
In Repair mode I can mount /dev/sda3 and all the contents are there. Any ideas how I can fix this? As of now I can't boot.
It might be useful to know the age of the HD controller chip and the driver it requires, as well as what if any other devices are present on that controller family. Are these PATA? SATA? Is there a DVD or CDROM? If so, on what controller? How is the BIOS boot order set? ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~ By 'in the past' I mean using Suse 11.1 dvd's on various hardware systems running 11.1, or earlier. However, this is the second 11.2 system where Grub loads, but cannot locate the drive. If I do a fresh install everything works. The original drive was removed, so that is not the issue. There is only one drive in the system, which appears in the BIOS, along with a floppy and dvd-rom drive.
From the repair mode I used the 'start from scratch' option and that fixed the problem, although I wish I new how to fix it from the CLI and not rely on a UI.

Maybe the repair boot logged itself in /root/inst-sys or somewhere in /var/log. I remember a lot of "Waiting for device /dev/blah to appear ... could not find /dev/blah" trouble during the 11.2 development period, so maybe a dig through Buzilla covering that period might help. It certainly would be good to know if you "advance" beyond 11.2.
