Hi Kester,
I think you're right, LaTeX is a bit too rigid for me. If its rigidity conformed in every case to the best typographical style -- it's the rare case in setting plain text where you need the "normal" titling arabic numbers and not the other way around -- it'd be fine. But it doesn't and using packages seems fraught with pitfalls. As I mentioned, I find the bloated-bold title style a bit much. It so happens that I found one example of such behaviour not produced by LaTeX, that being an art book from the V & A. Nonetheless, I prefer my own titling style, and as I was trying to implement it with the 'letterspace' package, I discovered a bug in that package. Ack! There is also the package 'soul', but I haven't figured out how to add new fonts to it... I suppose I had better learn TeX. The TeXbook is on its way.
So... I shall also have to wade back into usenet? which I have scrupulously avoided for 7 years.
Anyhow, thanks again.
