I am running 9.1 on my wife's laptop on a LAN at home, where all the computers are connected to the internet through a firewall running Devil Linux on CD, and we are using the local high speed cable company for internet access. All the other computers in the house are accessing all sites on the internet fine, but hers has suddenly stopped accessing anything but a few sites, such as yahoo and google. For instance, if she tries to download her email, or access our bank's website, or just about any other website, I get a "unknown host" message. When I ping these websites from her laptop, including her email's pop-server, I get an unknown host message. However, if I go directly to www.yahoo.com, or www.google.com, I get good, fast responsive interaction, and I am able to do web searches, etc... However, if I click on any of the links that come up, I once again get an "unknown host" message. I have checked my network settings on this computer, and they are the same as on my systems that are working fine. Also, this computer was working fine with these settings for about the past 6 months prior to this strange phenomenon. I have gotten Linux systems, especially Suse, on the internet with a great deal of success the past 3 years, and this is the first time I have run into this type of problem. I really have no idea where to begin. I figure it is something simple I am overlooking, but don't know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I need to get this machine working again for my wife's business. Thanks in advance for your help. Andy Prough Austin, Texas

DHCP or static? What does ´ifstatus eth0´ show; are the correct DHCP, DNS, gateway, client IP addresses showing? If its DHCP is there any change if you do an ´ifdown eth0´ followed by an ´ifup eth0´? Does a ´ping www.yahoo.com´ work? Have you tried a different ethernet cable and/or port on the ethernet switch? Stan

Since you can get to yahoo I'll assume the internet connection is basically working, so try to ping the DNS IP address (making sure you use the same DNS that you know works from the other systems)
