SLES9 only reporting 3.5GiB of 4GiB Memory
I just installed SLES9. It is only reporting 3.5GiB of the 4.0GiB installed in the system. Why isn't it recognizing the other 512MiB? Do I need to pass some sort of kernel parameter? This is an HP Proliant DL380 G4 w/6GiB physical memory installed, but with one bank configured as in standby for failover. -- Cameron

Sure you've installed the 64bit version of SLES9? As far I know, the 64 bit version of the fernel packages don't have need to segment the maximum memory size. But the 32 bit version does. There's an smp version (or smp4G) and a bigsmp version. As I've tested, in one of our systems (IBM xSeries 345 4Gb RAM), the SL-9.1 smp4G kernel don't sees 256Mb of RAM. So I must install the bigsmp version. In another (IBM eServer 325 AMD64 5Gb RAM), the default SL-91 64 bit version runs fine, and sees all the 5Gb. No kernel parameters needed. I guess this is a 32bit system. On those systems the BIOS reserves I/O address space for PCI which gives you the hole you observe. Philipp
