I would like to run the gnome application gweater-applet-2 on my KDE3.2.2 desktop. I've found the executable in /opt/gnome/libexe, at least I thought it was the executable, but it doesn't want t run.

GNOME applets are designed to run on a GNOME panel, so without the GNOME desktop running, they won't work. Is there a similar thing for the KDE Kicker? -- James Ogley, UNIX Systems Administrator, Pinnacle Insurance Plc james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk +44 (0) 20 8731 3619 www.pinnacle.co.uk Personal: james@rubberturnip.org.uk www.rubberturnip.org.uk Updated GNOME packages for SUSE LINUX: www.usr-local-bin.org

Don't now gweather, but i assume it is the same as kwaether. This applet is part of the 'toys' kde package. Peter

No, they're not the same. The gnome application has a page for a radar picture (which is the feature in which I am interested)

I thought one of the main strengths of the OS was that you could run Gnome apps if you were using KDE or vice versa, provided of course that you had the Gnome libraries loaded. Excuse me for requiring an explanation but it will only lead to a better understanding by all concerned. Applications yes, but both DEs have their own panel, which can have special mini-applications called applets embedded within them. There is also the freedesktop.org "Notification Area" standard, which both DEs support, but this is for icons that can be used to control full applications (like the System Tray in a certain less-free strain of OSs) -- James Ogley, UNIX Systems Administrator, Pinnacle Insurance Plc james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk +44 (0) 20 8731 3619 www.pinnacle.co.uk Personal: james@rubberturnip.org.uk www.rubberturnip.org.uk Updated GNOME packages for SUSE LINUX: www.usr-local-bin.org

So in other words if I have seen a GNOME CPU applet I cannot have that same applet in my own KDE? so in other words the look and feel or icons are DE specific but the programs can be ported between the two? Hylton

Not quite - yes, the look & feel are DE specific, but if you run a KDE app under GNOME, it will adopt your KDE theme of course... It's not a case of porting applications from one DE to the other, they can just be run whichever you use, it's the panel/kicker applets that require you to be using the appropriate DE -- James Ogley, UNIX Systems Administrator, Pinnacle Insurance Plc james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk +44 (0) 20 8731 3619 www.pinnacle.co.uk Personal: james@rubberturnip.org.uk www.rubberturnip.org.uk Updated GNOME packages for SUSE LINUX: www.usr-local-bin.org
