Re: Canon pixma mx7600 Canon does not, in any way, provide Linux hardware support for this printer. They do, however, have MacOSX CUPS drivers. If you can extract the files, and install them manually, you might be able to get it to work. After all, CUPS is CUPS, regardless if it's running on Linux or OpenBSD (what OSX is based on).
EDIT: You can find information on how to open Mac's dmg files here. Or you can just mount the file. DMG files are just disk images of Apple's file system: HFS.
to mount it: Code:
sudo mount -t hfs -o loop printerdriver.dmg /mount/point
EDIT2: You must install the following packages first: hfsplus hfsutils hfsprogs libhfsp0
Thanks Fred. Actually, I saw this too and tried it. Alas, I couldn't even get the loopback to work! After this I realized that the Canon is not a Postscript device, and has some kind of a proprietary print language. I think the Mac cups driver must include some kind of a binary program to do the actual conversion. I can't imagine this running on a Linux system.
No.....not at all.
I give up and am happy to buy another printer, I can use them both.
Sorry.....was the only "answer" I found. I can't recommend HP printers enough. I have a large format pro. photo printer from them.....AWESOME. Epson is a second choice. I dunno about HP. My HP Deskjet 500 I bought in '92 seems to be on the blink. It might be giving up the ghost. Seriously, though, I have had no issues under openSUSE with either HP or Epson. I have several family members with either HP or Epson and they all work flawlessly. I've had Cannon and Epson as well as HP. I currently have an HP all-in-one attached to my wife's Windows XP and a discarded HP Color Laserjet 4500N. Both work flawlessly. Having been employed by HP in the Linux area, I know that HP spends a lot of bucks in the Linux area. Additionally, Brother printers seem to perform well under Linux. -- -- Gerald Feldman <feldman.g@comcast.net> PGP key id: 537C5846 PGP Key fingerprint: 3D1B 8377 A3C0 A5F2 ECBB CA3B 4607 4319 537C 5846 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hey, Duaine - They may have slacked here. Be interesting to know where all those bucks go. Their "tech" support even forced me to buy a new hard drive so I could wipe suse and my ext3 home partition off the original before they would answer questions about whether I had hardware problems or not. It wasn't even enough that these were separate partitions in a dual-boot setup. (And yes, I had pressed the issue until I got to at least one level above the bottom-feeders in India.) John just add HP to the list of Lazy vendors. I get the same response from Lite-on and I/Omagic on their DVD drives. MS sure buys a lot of people! I tryed to get a diagnostic from Maxtor for one of their drives and got the same answer, but searching Seagate site I found a cli diagnostic for Linux that worked fine, neither the Maxtor or Seagate support people new about it. Same company Seagate owns Maxtor. If you find a good DVD thats supported please post whos it is. I need a drive I can depend on. Hi John, To be fair to the manufacturer, you void the warranty when substantially alter the product. It makes it too difficult, in general, do diagnose problems if you don't have a known baseline to start from. I almost ran into this a couple of weeks ago with the new HP I bought with my own money (I mentioned this when I started this thread). The first thing I did with the new computer was to boot it with the installed Vista just to make sure everything was working OK. Then, I blew Vista away and installed SuSE 11.0. Then, I noticed problems with the NIC connection. Was the problem SuSE's or HP's? It seemed to work with Vista, but I couldn't prove anything since it didn't exist anymore. I checked HP's web site and noticed that they had a ROM BIOS update. Fine, let's flash the BIOS and see what happens! Bzzzzt!!! Wrong! Turns out I needed Vista to install the update! I didn't have the courage to try the flash with a DosBoot floppy, and I couldn't restore Vista because I blew HP's partition away when I reformatted the disk. Sooo, I ordered a Vista reinstall set from HP. They charged a couple of bucks plus shipping and soon I had the restore set in hand and started the process. (BTW, what a PIG! Four CD's and 2.5 hours to reinstall! I have know idea what it was doing, but it was busy!) So now I had a restored computer and the NIC was working again. I performed the flash without issue. Then, I blew away the restored Vista again to try 11.0 (dual-booting didn't seem to work). With 11.0 back the NIC was failing again! This is when I tried Knoppix and an update/recompile of the Realtek kernel module. All failed. The problem was that I had modified the computer from its intended state and since it didn't work it was "my" problem, not HP's. I suppose I could have reinstalled Vista again and try to return it to Frys, but I really needed a computer. This is when I unplugged the wireless board that came with the computer and installed a D-Link PCI-E 1x NIC and never looked back. BTW, SuSE didn't even see the wireless interface, but who cares? Sorry for the long missive, but maybe someone can learn something from my stumbling about. Hi John,
To be fair to the manufacturer, you void the warranty when substantially alter the product. It makes it too difficult, in general, do diagnose problems if you don't have a known baseline to start from.
I don't accept the notion that invisible partitions on the original hard drive are a substantial alteration, and hp stopped stalling after I restored the Windows partition to its original size...
...Then, I blew Vista away and installed SuSE 11.0. Then, I noticed problems with the NIC connection. ...
But I didn't blow away XP Pro, as I need it for some of my professional software. The original software was still there, having just as much trouble with the hardware as suse. Suse was on a separate partition in a dual-boot setup. The home directory was in a separate partition. And when I finally gave up and bought both the new hard drive and the usb adapter so I could save my home partition, and reformatted the original partition and reinstalled XP from the restore partition, ... XP still had the same problems with the hardware that suse had.
Sorry for the long missive, but maybe someone can learn something from my stumbling about.
I'd say the most important thing we can learn is not to simply discard software we've paid for. Use the tools to back it up onto dvd, in case the hard drive crashes (as the original had less than a month after I bought this computer). I had even kept the original restore partition on the hard drive, as I mentioned above. jp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why? Maybe you are talking to the wrong people. DVD support for Linux is nowadays mostly handled by the author(s) of dvd+rw-tools with or without the assistance of the DVD manufacturers. (Though I notice the site seems to have some sponsorship from HP). Go to ... http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/ for more info... Whether the HP first line support people (or any IT first line support people) should know more about their products and IT generally is not debated. The majority are muppets who drive 2nd and 3rd line support people and customers crazy.., (but as the old saying goes if you pay peanuts you get monkeys... and if they are not monkeys they are usually managed by donkeys... pardon me mixing my metaphors...:-) ) However, if you really believe that you got a personal response from the chief product designer at HP then you are definitely living on a different planet to me (most likely it was 1st line support minion drafted in to respond to the hoi pollio ).... - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
