Try changing the version of SSH in putty configs to either 1 or 2 or 2,1 or 1,2 . I faced the same problem i tried with different SSH protocol versions and it worked ... I use PuTTY (ver 0.55b) everyday to connect from my XP laptop to my SUSE box. Never had a problem from 9.x to current 10.1. In my case the "Preferred protocol version" is 2 (but I guess that the client can switch to 1 if necessary).
I'd suggest that you have a look at the "event log". You can find it under the menu that appears by clicking on the little icon in the top-left corner of PuTTY's window. -mw
I am getting the exact same thing. I have tried all the combinations that
were suggested. I looked at the log and all it says is Access Denied.
This use to work, but then just stopped one day a couple of weeks
ago....does anyone have any ideas?

Here works OK with the default install. Using PuTTY 0.56 on W2K, Preferred protocol set to 2 (not using the fallback). I tried with PuTTY 0.58 as well, no problems. Set the LogLevel of sshd to DEBUG, DEBUG1, 2 or 3. This should output the password you tried to be logged. That way you will be able to eliminate some language/kbd settings as source of the problem. Also, it will show why and where it denies access. Do not forget to restart the sshd service after you change the config file. -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Windows is a 32-bit extension to a 16-bit graphical shell for an 8-bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit microprocessor by a 2-bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.
Sorry, mine was not working because I had forgot to re-enable port
forwarding on my router...thanks for the help.
