.mp3 to .wav conversion tool (technical question)
3rd try one week later: On Multimedia, apparently, no one knows to answer. So I ask this here. -orig mail- I thought I sent this out on june 9th, but it never appeared on list, but it was my fault: I did not open a new thread. Please excuse that typo of mine! written by Lew Wolfgang:
Just us it like this:
mpg123 -s something.mpg >something.cdr
The file format is not .wav, but in the format that may be burned directly by cdrecord if you
Where is the difference between plain .WAV format and what mpg123 writes as above? Want to know about technical data and background. Thanks! Are you looking for an answer to the subject-line, or help on the mechanism of the following command?
mpg123 -s something.mpg >something.cdr
I'm no .mp3 expert but I can tell you you will never extract a wav from mp3 that matches the sound quality of the original wav. But you probably already knew that.
Head to http://m1.651.telia.com/~u65105865/make_audio/
and grab this app, it coverts to wav from mp3.
The author could help with the question as well.

Shit. APologies to all who did get me wrong. I am not asking for differences between wav and mpg. I know them from practice in years now. Read carefully! I want to know about the differences (again READ!!!!!DAMN!) between original .WAV format and that "cdr" format which is being written out by mpg123 (using -w switch). Is there any at all? That all came up in another thread, where we were discussing conversion scripts. -- *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨¨*¤ =Oliver@home= *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨*¤ I http://www.bmw-roadster.de/Friends/Olli/olli.html I I http://www.bmw-roadster.de/Friends/friends.html I I http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VGAP-93 I I http://home.t-online.de/home/spacecraft.portal I

Cdr files (used by audio cd's) are basically wav files minus some headers. Charles -- "All language designers are arrogant. Goes with the territory..." (By Larry Wall)

True, but what headers? How long are these? Where can I read about that? What is the difference in burning .WAV and .CDR?
Once you have a .cdr file, you can create a .wav file using sox.

IIRC, I think it is all header. CDR's are just "Raw Audio CD Data".

IF you are burning wav's into an audio CD, they are converted to cdr's before burning to disk. Charles -- A Linux machine! because a 486 is a terrible thing to waste! (By jjs@wintermute.ucr.edu, Joe Sloan)

The so-called cdr data is in fact raw PCM data without any headers at all. It is the data portion of both cda files (cd audio tracks) and wav files. wav files and cda files are both RIFF files. cda files are not as versatile as wav (it's locked at 44.1 kHz for instance), so wav files have more meta data information to describe the PCM data. The difference between burning .wav and .cdr (or .cda) is the difference between being able to play the music in a standard cd player and not. Simply put, an audio cd that is to be used outside a computer needs to be in cda format. A more technical description can be found on a number of places on the net. http://www.sonicspot.com/guide/fileformatlist.html has a good description of the wav format. //Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'
Thanks Charles, Thanks Anders! Good answers! Thanks for the link. Gonna check that one.
