Well, if you're interested, it's http://netcat.sourceforge.net/... However, the "recommendation" was not serious. NetCat is not a browser, but rather a very flexible network analysis and diagnostic tool. Perhaps Allen was attempting to humorously suggest that you begin running a more up-to-date version of SuSE Linux. May we recommend version 10.0, just out. It's WONDERFUL! Seriously, it's a vast improvement over 8.0.
Thanks, Sibil

Ah, but what if the guy's hardware will not run SuSE 8? If you need something lightweight what about Dillo? Or, perhpas the new Opera will run? I have only just taken a look at this today and it looks rather nice now I don't have to put up with adverts :-) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. "Guy?" Anyway, that's a nonsequitur, even if fixed from "SuSE 8" to "SuSE 10". There's nothing inherently more resource-consumptive about release 10 than 8. If anything, more optimization has been done and it can be expected to perform better. If one creates a 10.0 setup that is comparable to what was used in 8.0, performance can be expected to be at least as good.

Yes, there is. The rescue system takes more memory, as does the installation system itself. I have had to stop using the 10 rescue-system and either use Knoppix or the 9.0 rescue system. Installation-wise, 10 needs at least 96Mb RAM, whereas 8 was ok with 64M. /Per Jessen, Zürich

What is the "rescue system?" But I qualified my claim by saying it was for a comparable installation. If this rescue system thing is a major new function, then it would not count as a "comparable installation."

It's a standalone system that is started when you select "Rescue System" :-) - it's one of the options on the very first menu you get when booting off CD1.
But I qualified my claim by saying it was for a comparable installation. If this rescue system thing is a major new function,
It's been there as long as I can remember. At least since 6.x, probably even earlier. /Per Jessen, Zürich

So: A) How does it constitute something added since 8.0? B) How does the presence of this boot option slow normal operations?

Not added, but changed. The 10.0 rescue system has a bigger footprint and no longer runs on the machine(s) that the 8.0 rescue system ran on. The same goes for the installation system itself. /Per Jessen, Zürich

Well then Ill be just fine at 256 on this old PII as long as I keep evolution in Gnome and save KDE for other things. -- ___ _ _ _ ____ _ _ _ | | | | [__ | | | |___ |_|_| ___] | \/

Yes, you got it :) Although me and Marcus from SUSE had a little inside joke about NetCat as a web browser.
Seriously, it's a vast improvement over 8.0.
