Is there any interest and/or willingness to let people have an @openSUSE.org email adress? Just a forwarder, not a mailbox. This could be given to people using their Bugtrack login. Advantages: People wil get an emailadress and then also have the login for bugzilla. This would make it easier for people to add bugs. People will get a feeling of belonging really to openSUSE (coolness factor) Other people will see the domain name, wich means free advertisement. Disadvatages: Extra server to maintain. Making rules of when to remove the account (X bounces, spam abuse) Extra trafic. Setting up and configuration What do you think about this idea and would Novell be willing to think about this, as this would be completely sponsored by Novell. houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. Funny you mention it, I was thinking about exactly the same idea yesterday.

Could, yes, but doesn't have to. A freely chooseable nickname would do as well.

Yep.
Disadvatages: Extra server to maintain. Making rules of when to remove the account (X bounces, spam abuse) Extra trafic. Setting up and configuration
Not sure that's all that much work. The potential issue I see here is legal.

I like it.

Excellent idea. Now we need vote box for registered users. I don't know is that big problem to establish one for all possible issues that are best served if majority agrees with. -- Regards, Rajko.

It might be worth discussing to bundle this with openSUSE boxes sold by SUSE. So it would be an addon to your argument of free advertisement. Plus it might be seen as an invitation to join openSUSE community. And if there will be such a forwarding service it might also be interesting to discuss having local openSUSE Groups eg. sorting users by region / place / city. (which might be virtual groups in a first place but wich may become physical ones. Virtual groups in the meaning of bringing people closer together in their region and give a helping hand forming a loal(ised? pardon my english) placed group.) Another advantage in my eyes is the chance to motivate users to have a more active part in participating openSUSE community, as a strategy / campaign to mobilize brothers in arms. This can be done by offering additional services (workplaces) like a blog, a podcast channel, news bulletin(s) or by reporting about such activities.

Asuming the numbers of users of other sites who offer such a service I would forecast / asume: If it will be free there might be between 3000 and 5000 users If it is associated to a donation it might be 1000 to 3000 users So I wouldn't asume that this will bring so much users that it really will become a problem of additional reccources. On the other hand if it will attract tenthousands of users it wouldn't be bad, wouldn't it? :-))

It might be interesting to have a look on other institutions / organisations / groups who offer such service(s) and how it's organised: - Fellowship of FSFE (http://fsfe.org/) Forward address: nickname@fsfe,org Adons: Fellows get an gpg Crypto Card for signing mails etc. personalized webspace (http://fsfe.org/en/fellows/nickname/), blog, etc. Fee / Donation: 120,-€ (60,-€ relief / reduced) per year, donation to FSF Europe - Redhat? - Ubuntu? - Mandrivia? - ATTAC? - Greenpeace? - WWF? - Others? I don't know details about other communities which offer such a service, may be some of you know other examples? regards, Thomas

A link to it might be nice, but I would realy like to keep openSUSE and SUSE seperated.

Not sure how I feel about the localized version. Per language, OK, but for me the person I have contact with can be my next door neighbour or somebody form India or South Africa or Brazil. <snip because I agree>

Perhaps very much later. For now kust a forwarding adress. The rest can come later. For now you can make your own WiKi page. ;-) <snip>
Fee / Donation: 120,-??? (60,-??? relief / reduced) per year, donation to FSF Europe
For a donation of 120EUR you get a new boxed version when they come out. The change you can donate directly to FSF. ;-) houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. Why this? - If Novell and so SUSE really believe that openSUSE will be the base of all future products of their company I would see this as a support of openSUSE by NOVELL/SUSE. Not as a free (free in the meaning of free beer) support for NOVELL/SUSE(boxes) by openSUSE. - And as a side effect NOVELL/SUSE has (the chance) to clarify the relationship between NOVELL/SUSE and the openSUSE project. BTW. I see that there still is a big need clarifying this. Many people don't know how NOVELL/SUSE and openSUSE are related to each other (even NOVELL and SUSE people) - And if Novell/SUSE will give eg. 2,-€ to 5,-€ per Box to somthing like a openSUSE foundation/trust/mutual fund/.../whatever it may become a base for something we don't know yet, but which will be helpfull I will bet. > > > And if there will be such a forwarding service it might also be > > interesting to discuss having local openSUSE Groups eg. sorting users by > > region / place / city. > > Not sure how I feel about the localized version. But we all know that people get socialized / crowded much better in reall live face to face than virtually. Doing this virtually is a bit like making friends with a cup of tea without tea. It is hard to do this via email, irc or whatever. > >> > > This can be done by offering additional services (workplaces) like a > > blog, a podcast channel, news bulletin(s) or by reporting about such > > activities. > > Perhaps very much later. For now kust a forwarding adress. The rest can > come later. For now you can make your own WiKi page. ;-) Yepp, but an own wiki page already is some kind of private webspace. It lacks privacy only because you can't restrict write access on a user level. And also there is an Planet SUSE blog, what's missing is linking email forwarding, private wiki, openSUSE blog (aside Planet SUSE), bugzilla, Podcast, and may be some other interesting pieces together, eg. in a new template for private wiki pages. So that openSUSE community people will get easy access to all this in one place. And there is a Novell podcast, a more technical one in the moment, but why not having a openSUSE podcast once a month at this place? (Or may be aside this place) > > > > Fee / Donation: 120,-??? FSF != FSFE 2. This was just an example for a commonity based email forwarding sevice, not an introducement for a discussion if it makes sense to donate. ;) regards, Thomas

Why this?
Because openSUSE is the comunity and SUSE is the distribution.

I think we will have this later, when we have running user management in the build service. bye adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany email: adrian@suse.de
