[opensuse] Upgrading A Video Card
Hi, In a few days, I'll be upgrading my video card from an nVidia 7300 to an nVidia 8600. Is there anything I need to do before and / or after replacing the card? I currently have these nVidia packages installed: % rpm -qa |egrep -i nvid x11-video-nvidiaG01-169.12-0.1 nvidia-gfxG01-kmp-bigsmp-169.12_2.6.22.17_0.1-0.1 Randall Schulz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sorry, I forgot to mention, this is openSUSE 10.3, 32-bit. RRS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

As both cards use the same driver, the exchange should go painless. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I agree with Philipp. The nvidia kernel module is already loaded from the 7300 and that is all that matters. Your existing xorg.conf will work fine. You should just be able to take the 7300 out and put the 8600 in and hit go. (and yes, this is one situation where you will have to restart linux...) If you want to test it before jumping into xdm, just boot to runlevel 3 after the install and check with sax2. ALSO!: cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.7300 before shutting down to do the install. (just in case..) -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Shutting down? You mean I can't hot-swap a PCIe card?? (Just kidding!)
