I've just run nmap and it reported that port 936tcp was open. In Yast I've set ssh and ntp to be open on the firewall (SuSEfirewall) nothing else. /etc/services says that 930, 933, 936 are not used. What is using tcp on port 936? Saint reported that 930 and 933 were also open using UDP. What used these ports? How do I close them? -- Collector of vintage computers http://www.ncf.ca/~ba600 Machines to trade http://www.ncf.ca/~ba600/trade.html Open Source Weekend http://www.osw.ca

'netstat -tulpen' as root should tell you what process opened this port.
looks like rpc.statd opened all three of them. -- Collector of vintage computers http://www.ncf.ca/~ba600 Machines to trade http://www.ncf.ca/~ba600/trade.html Open Source Weekend http://www.osw.ca

Looks like your NFS server is running.

And if that doesn't, check with rpcinfo -p. ;-)

You can turn it off in YaST2 > Network services > NFS Server Michael

Connection refused can be the firewall sending a reject answer and you could see this if you block port 111 (used by portmapper) on your firewall. Try turning the firewall off and repeat rpcinfo -p. Is this box a NFS or NIS client? Those services also use the portmapper to obtain port assignments. Jeff
