I have been using Mozilla 0.8.1 for a few days now. It works very well. Between this and Konq I am very happy with internet browsing under Linux. Hey Ben, what's the new job? Regards, Jethro

Konqueror is just excellent. True, there are some web pages it won't handle but it is very robust. I also used Opera which is screaming fast but you have to purchase it. Before KDE 2, I used KFM which was very fast but limited in functionality.

netscape 4.76 is more or less stable, but the netscape6 is really hopeless and slow
konquerer [havent really used it... does it hndle css and js pages correctly]
very, very good in my opinion .. even the java applets (via imb java jre) most of the times works good. Css 1 and a part of Css2 works fine, sometimes even better then Opera. Konquerer have sometimes problems with some sites with javascript, but most of the time it's because bad scripting work. Opera is a alternative but have problems: it gives sometimes pages not found where other browsers don't have this problem and crashed a lot of times. A browser you paid for must be better then that (pay or you have to look at irritating big banners).

One question about Konqueror: does it support the same sorts of transaction encryption as Netscape (and Internet Explorer)? That's what you need to do credit card transactions over the Web. Paul Abrahams

It seemed to work and the server side said there was an SSL connection. A side note..Konq also uses Netscape plugins..which is a nice feature. -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

I wasn't really happy with Netscape 6 myself. (6.0 that is.) 6.1 seems to work a whole lot better. Opera is looking good, however, it as of yet dosen't handle Java in the linux version. M

Now this is what I have "developed" :) obi1@obieito:~ > cat /usr/bin/kn killall -9 netscape rm $HOME/.netscape/lock obi1@obieito:~ > It's more of a joke than anything else, but this shitty script made its way to my usr/bin and I also have a Desktop link which unfortunately I use a lot. If you are new to this, you can do it like this : log as root or su type this cat > /usr/bin/kn killall -9 netscape rm $HOME/.netscape/lock CTRL+D And thats it. Call it with kn, it kills all netscape sessions and deletes the lock file.
netscape 4.76 is more or less stable, but the netscape6 is really hopeless and slow
More or less stable ??? Then MY 4.76 netscape is NOT stable at all, it's the only app that has frequently hanged up the whole graphic subsystem... together with RealPlayer 8 and very few times konqueror. I use netscape because it loads quickly, mozilla 0.8 looks great but is PAINFULLY slooooooowwwwwwww... you can see the screeen pixels being drawn one by one... it needs more work, though the features and look-and-feel are GREAT. Konqueror ( my humble opinion ) is kinda 'toy' browser still, but its reasonably fast and small. Opera I havent tried it in linux, I tried it in windoze about two years ago it was under heavy development but promised to be a good one, everybody who uses it seems to have a good opinion.
I wasn't really happy with Netscape 6 myself. (6.0 that is.) 6.1 seems to work a whole lot better.

StarOffice ??? The browser is ok, but if mozilla is slow, then well, I have a 266mhz PII with 128 RAM and I can go fetch a coffee while s.o. starts... I'd never use that for a browser; I only use it if I am editing or spreadsheatting and need a quick browse ( does this phrase look sexual to me only ? ) My 2 cents ( Euro-cents, of course ;) - -- - From the forgotten corner in Europe, Land of Breogan Powered by GNU/Linux SuSE 7.0 - Linux user #97.266 ...may the force be with you -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.1e-SuSE (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE60gou43VmOmspzC4RAhKpAJ9ZgvY6VX8y2P8AQjwBBBFAC9tjaQCgvR8a FQ7j9J4jcZrl/ORvVLm1wyU= =FRvt -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
Cool, that works nicely. I noticed that sometime I get the doubleclick(start 2 instances of NS...then It complains about the lock file) other than that your script sure helps

Im runing 4.7 came with 7.1 I use it only because Ive used Ns since v 2 but seeing knoqurer.. pretty much blows it away. This vers on NS dosnt even hanld basic stylesheets!! sigh.... I see NS slipping away. And I agree totally about mozilla being a dog. BUT.... with the new 1G procesors I supose that too wont be an issue. As lonsg as I can use something that works I relitivelly happy. I do love NS tho... thanks for the scrip rob -- To the best of my recollection, Senator, I can't recall. 7:26pm up 4 days, 12:32, 2 users, load average: 0.18, 0.44, 0.43 __ _ / / (_)__ __ ____ __ / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \ / /____/_/_//_/\_,_//_\_\

Check out the script at http://eon.za.net/linux/nss/ which solves all of these Netscape problems. It handles your lock file, even if you 'kill -9' netscape. If you try to run multiple instances, it will simply open a new window with the currently running copy. Very Nice... thank you. Im going to implement this although seems i getting attached to kmail ;-) Ill definetly set it up thanks rob

Cool that works well, One thing I have to be carefull of is double clicking (if I double click too fast Ill get a "lock file) My NS 4.7 cant render even simple css or js even with it enabled! Konqurer is much better aleit a bit slower. Ive used NS since v 2 and always liked it, its just too bad it never went well on Linux. Agreed mozilla is painfully slow, but I supose with the faster processors and cheaper emory, that wont be an issue. thanks for the script rob
