[opensuse] Installing Madwifi
I try to install on my laptop Aspire 5315 with openSUSE 11.0 madwifi following the instructions of 'First Time User' HOWTO but at make I get 'command not found'. Can some one give me a suggestion how to advance? Thanks in advance, André den Oudsten -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Andre, I thought you had this fixed? To get started, please tell us: (1) post the output of 'rpm -qa | grep wifi' (2) post the output of 'uname -r' (3) post the output of 'lspci' (4) post the output of 'lsusb -v' We will go from there. -- David C. I had it fixed, but after that I got trouble with the shared key for WAP and with the heath management of my laptop, so I have now a new one. Hi I'd look into the ATH9K driver. It is included in the newest kernel (Linux kernel, I do not think there is a Suse version with it as yet) so it should be stable Neil -- There are three kinds of people: Those who can count, and those who cannot count ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ** Hi! Hi Andre, I have the same chip set for my wifi card (5113WMLI Acer), and I'm using the same driver that you have dl'ed 0.94? I don't remember what exactly how I got it to go the first time, but what I'm doing after each kernel update is "make" and then "make install", and then rebooting (I don't actually know what to do next at the CLI to avoid rebooting and have the driver in effect, I suppose I ought to ask David if He has a script for that as well). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Nope He's got the AR242x, which I have as well, and He's got the same mad-wifi dl'ed and on His system. This ought to get His wifi working. David Rankin does this much better than I do, so I'm waiting for David to give the OP the bugs ironed out, new install of mad-wifi. The way the OP is doing it, he will be in the same position as I am, rebuilding the driver with each kernel update. Simple enough with make, make install as root, but I don't remember if the make file was included, or if he'll need to add the config command before doing make and make install.

Andre,
I thought you had this fixed? To get started, please tell us:
(1) post the output of 'rpm -qa | grep wifi' (2) post the output of 'uname -r' (3) post the output of 'lspci' (4) post the output of 'lsusb -v'
We will go from there.
I had it fixed, but after that I got trouble with the shared key for WAP and with the heath management of my laptop, so I have now a new one.
I started 'First Time User' with removing madwifi 0.9.3.99-118.1 as delivered with 11.0
rpm -qa | grep wifi gave no result uname -r gave 2.6.25.18-0.2
lspci gave 06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x

Andre, If you have installed any madwifi rpms already, remove them. Then: (1) Go download/install the madwifi rpms from: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/schmolle1980/openSUSE_11.0/ (2) After the install, start yast and configure the new network device: Under the 'General' tab, 'Divice Control' select 'Enable Device Control for Non-root User Via Kinternet' Under the 'Address' tab, select Dynamic Address Under the 'Hardware' tab, make sure the Module Name is 'ath_pci' Click Next: Operating Mode: Managed Enter your SSID Enter you Authentication Mode, etc.. (3) Next you will simply need to start network manager and add and configure your card. If you have installed any madwifi rpms already, remove them. Then:
(1) Go download/install the madwifi rpms from:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/schmolle1980/openSUSE_11.0/
(2) After the install, start yast and configure the new network device:
Under the 'General' tab, 'Divice Control' select 'Enable Device Control for Non-root User Via Kinternet'
Under the 'Address' tab, select Dynamic Address
Under the 'Hardware' tab, make sure the Module Name is 'ath_pci'
Click Next:

Do you have the kernel source installed? IIRC you need the kernel source for the post install script of the madwifi driver to build the ath_pci.ko kernel module against. If you don't have it installed, install the kernel-source and kernel-syms and then reinstall madwifi and I bet you have an ath_pci.ko module after that ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Andre Good, we are getting there. On my box lspci shows my card as: 17:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01) Yours is the same card: 06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01) I have the ath_pci.ko module at: /lib/modules/2.6.25.18-0.2-default/weak-updates/ath/ath_pci.ko I have the following installed: 17:22 alchemy~> rpm -qa | grep madwifi madwifi-debuginfo-r3725+AR5007EG-2.2 madwifi-debugsource-r3725+AR5007EG-2.2 madwifi-r3725+AR5007EG-2.2 madwifi-devel-r3725+AR5007EG-2.2 madwifi-kmp-default-r3725+AR5007EG_2.6.25.5_1.1-2.2 I don't know why we have the module installed in different places, but it shouldn't make a difference. I may have rebuilt the driver from .src.rpm but I don't recall. You can download the exact rpms I'm running on from my copy at: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/openSUSE_11.0/x86_64/madwifi/schmolle/ The src.rpm is also included in the /src directory. If you can't get to the site, let me know and give me your WAN IP and I'll unblock the address block that is causing problems. When I go to configure the driver in Yast I can select the ath_pci module here: (see the screenshot below) http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/yast/madwifi_ath_pci.jpg If you don't have both the ath5k and ath_pci module, you may not be able to select, but you should still see the ath_pci module shown in the box. Take a look and report back. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. ifup wlan0 -o auto and that reacted with Interface wlan0 is not available Should that be the trouble? And how would I make that available? André -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try modprobe ath_pci. Assuming that is the correct module for that card, that may allow you to see the device. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Andre,
I thought you had this fixed? To get started, please tell us:
(1) post the output of 'rpm -qa | grep wifi' (2) post the output of 'uname -r' (3) post the output of 'lspci' (4) post the output of 'lsusb -v'
We will go from there.
I forgot to say I downloaded madwifi 0.9.4 and had kernel-source, kernel-syms and linux-kernel-headers installed André -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Instead of madwifi you can try the compat-wireless drivers from http://linuxwireless.org. These drivers are backports, so that should be what is in 2.6.28 now. There are no rpms now, so you must build them yourself. Cheers, Herbert -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Don't give up, madwifi will work perfectly, we just got to figure out where the problem is. I think we have it solved removing the conflicting ath5k module. Remember, I'm running the exact same card and it is working flawlessly -- great range, full 54K (or as close to it as you can get). -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
