Hello listmates, I hope some of you can help me by shedding some light on the current situation. In short, I'd like to know if my machine is dying or if there is a software issue. You don't mention the suse version you run. locks-up could be bad memory, perhaps you should run the memtest.

These things can be reported on Bugzilla. That's why I ask about your version, too old or too new.

Ah, tainted... then they may reject the report.

You will have to reproduce without it. If it OOPS, then you should report. And if it doesn't, then you'll know who is to blame.

Ah, you did say 10.3, I didn't see it earlier. If it is a kernel bug, it might have been corrected since. Try first the plain open driver, then try 11.0 if it fails. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Yes, tainted because of the NVidia driver.

I'll try to reproduce the problem without the proprietary driver and see what happens. However, it could very well be the video card itself is failing. Since my post above, I have seen screen flashes and an unexpected crash of the X server. I've been using the NVidia driver for a long time and never had any problems with it, so I am suspecting a hardware problem...

I've been thinking of installing 11 on this machine, especially with the improved package management. I'm just afraid it will lock up on me during the install... Thanks, Carlos! Could be... but funny it results in kernel oopses.

Yes, that's a real concern. If you do, install to runlevel 3 only, and when system runs, switch to level 5. It is safer. Not to long ago I always did that: I had a few crashes during installation just while testing video.
Thanks, Carlos!

Well, I managed to get openSUSE 11 installed on this machine now, which means all my machines are now on 11. It froze once during install, but that was early on. I repeated the install and so far it seems to be running normally. I'll keep you all posted! Thanks so far, Joop

Joop, I've been through this twice in 8 years. Both times it was hardware. Once RAM and secondly a motherboard. To help diagnose, load mcelog. It is contained on your install DVD and will help identify any machine check exceptions (MCE) you are dealing with. If it catches any, you are 99.9% assured your issue is hardware. (there are very rare instances where code can trigger a mce - possible - but so is McCain becoming the 44th president) Additionally, I don't know where I got it, but I have an SuSE Machine Check Handling on Linux document by Andi Kleen (2004) that helps explain this a little further. (there are very rare instances where code can trigger a mce - possible - but so is McCain becoming the 44th president) The nvidia card/driver most likely isn't the problem, but you can easily eliminate the binary driver issue by editing your xorg.conf and commenting out the nvidia driver line and replacing it with the nv driver: # Driver "nvidia" Driver "nv" then as root drop to runlevel 3 remove the nvidia kernel module and install the nv kernel module: telinit 3 # or logout and choose console login (ctrl+N), then rmmod nvidia && modprobe -v nv if you get any errors, then make a copy of your current xorg.conf (do it now -- save it before sax borks it) and use sax2 to gen a new one with the basic driver: cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.nvidia sax2 Then restart your window manager by "telinit 5" or just logout if you used console login and wait 5 seconds -- it should restart on its own. That way you can completely eliminate any "taint" on the kernel and you may get more help with the issue on the list. (If it is a software bug, you will have to do it anyway) After your satisfied the video card and nvidia driver aren't the problem, just rework the steps above and re-enable the nvidia driver. I have 3 boxes running the driver without issue. Additionally, I don't know where I got it, but I have an SuSE Machine Check Handling on Linux document by Andi Kleen (2004) that helps explain mce a little further. Your welcome to it at: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/kernel/mce.pdf Good luck. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Hello David, Thanks for the detailed explanation and elaborate post! On Thursday 06 November 2008, David C. Rankin wrote:
I've been through this twice in 8 years. Both times it was hardware. Once RAM and secondly a motherboard. To help diagnose, load mcelog. It is contained on your install DVD and will help identify any machine check exceptions (MCE) you are dealing with. If it catches any, you are 99.9% assured your issue is hardware. (there are very rare instances where code can trigger a mce - possible - but so is McCain becoming the 44th president)
Well, it seems you were right about McCain...however, mcelog seems to be for 64bit systems only. My system is an old and lowly 32 bit AMD, running at 1400 Mhz. :-) But I suspect hardware as well, because I have been using Suse since 7.3, and RedHat before that. The only time I've seen Linux lock up on me, was with faulty hardware.
The nvidia card/driver most likely isn't the problem, but you can easily eliminate the binary driver issue by editing your xorg.conf and commenting out the nvidia driver line and replacing it with the nv driver:
<snip instructions> I uninstalled the proprietary Nvidia driver during the weekend and ran the system on the 'nv' driver. However, this still results in lock-ups. :-( I've ran a memory test as well during the weekend, but that has resulted in no errors, so I guess the RAM is fine. I have since installed openSUSE 11 on this machine, and so far it seems to be running quite stable. I'll keep you posted! But...I'm going to start looking out for a new machine all the same. I think after 7 years of loyal service, this machine has earned its retirement. :-) Thanks, Joop
