[opensuse] Problem with IceWM
openSUSE 12.1 64 bit running on AMD CPU When I upgraded to v12.1 last month I found the KDE desktop to be quite unstable, requiring logging out and then back in every half hour or so. Not being either a OS or a hardware person, only a user, I solved the problem by switching to the IceWM desktop. IceWM is as stable as the proverbial rock, but I can't figure out how to mount either a Pendrive or a DVD. I've tried googling the problem without finding solutions that I can either understand or am willing to try. I would appreciate pointers in the correct direction. Thanks in advance. -- Stephen P. I believe there is a problem with 12.1. I cannot automagically mount removable media unless it is in /etc/fstab. You can mount as user by installing pmount You need to edit /etc/pmount.conf and add: loop_allow_user = <your-user-name> then after inserting removable media do dmesg |tail and look for the device name for the media /dev/sd... do: pmount /dev/sdj1 ## example it will create the mount-point below /media to unmount: pumount /dev/sdj1 be sure to use the device you found in dmesg gud luk, -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

do: pmount /dev/sdj1 ## example it will create the mount-point below /media
to unmount: pumount /dev/sdj1
be sure to use the device you found in dmesg
Patrick, did you ever find out if this was related to /dev links no longer being created by default? (i.e. /dev/sr0 -> /dev/cdrom, etc.) There has been a lot of chatter on Arch about the recent approach being to no longer create any dev links and to handle it via udev rules or have the end-user create only the specific links required. IIRC this was driven by the kernel folks for security purposes. I haven't tried 12.1 yet, so I haven't tested, but if the new release is following this approach, that may explain at least part of the problem mounting removable devices. Stephen, you may also want to open an xterm and see what the /var/log/message output is on device insertion. If you can determine (or set in preference) what /dev/dvd... is being looked for, you can then create the link to sr0 (i.e.: ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd) or whatever it is looking for. -- David C. No, but I doubt it. I do *have* the links and still the problem.

Yes, for a cd/dvd, but for flash/pin drive....I believe no. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
