What do people use to create/edit web pages? I'm currently trying OpenOffice, but it seems to do some odd things, at least with pages that were originally created elsewhere (and contain _way_ too many <span> directives!) I personally use 'vi' :-) I did use Quanta for a while, and I think Eclipse might very well have an HTML/CSS/Javascript extension. /Per Jessen, Zürich

I've also been using Quanta for several years. Love it. It's simple, has loads of helpful tools... preview view etc etc. C

This question is an invitation to a religious war. I've seen it dozens of times. So I'll just say from the outset, I'm submitting one and only one post about this. Like others here, I've used vi(m), but just on occasion. I find emacs much friendlier and powerful. You can modify and/or prpgram just about anything in it. Creating macros is a breeze. You can also use it to read and create directories, read and send email, browse webpages, launch any other web browser with your html file in it, and a lot of other things. It has modes (sort of like a collection of shortcuts) not just for html, but also sgml and php and a few other languages. With an add-on called tramp, or another called ange-ftp, you can use emacs to edit a file on any other machine on the internet (of course you need access to that machine), making it really handy for updating pages on a machine hosted elsewhere. Of course it does regular things like spell-checking and on-the-fly spelling correction. Vi(m) might do some or all of this. I've just found that the learning curve for vi is much steeper and so I spend a lot more time thinking about how to move the cursor around. With emacs the distractions are far fewer, so I can concentrate much more on what I want to say. I do have some criticisms of emacs, but I've already voiced those enough (in other online venues) and this list isn't the place for them. Just to say that I'm not in love with emacs. It's just a really good tool to use. -- "This world ain't big enough for the both of us," said the big noema to the little noema.

I'm using 2.0. I suspect the problem might be that these are imported pages, and whatever created them in the first place has some peculiarities that OOo doesn't quite understand. It screws the layout, and then when I fix the layout, it generates stuff that is screwed on the browser. Ah well, I should probably use OOo from scratch or something, but I'm not sure I have time for that right now. I'll have to keep fixing by hand in vi until I have more time for a proper rebuild. You didn't say free or open source, but I can guess... I used Netscape for a few years... It was simple and could do a lot. We just found this and it looks good: http://www.nvu.com/ I haven't played with it that much yet...but so far it looks good. There are a ton of these open source that are decent. You don't say what you want...and what level. $ We still use Dreamweaver on our production boxes, but also have Go Live...not thrilled with it. (apple-mac) We are definitely a GUI place here. :) -- Thanks, George "America will never be destroyed from the outside. Quanta because it's free, feature rich, extendable and has the best technical support of any product I know. just join the mailing list at quanta@mail.kde.org and ask a question - response from the authors is almost always within 24hrs.
