[opensuse] Updating Opensuse 10.2
Hi All, I would like to upgrade my workstation from Suse 9.3 to Opensuse 10.2. My test install of 10.2 won't update. When I run the new updater, it shows the updates in the list, but then it keeps asking me to insert the media. The same dvd that I installed from is in the drive (10.2 GM DVD), but gives the following error...... ----- Please insert 'openSUSE-DVD5-download (Media source cd:///?devices=/dev/hdc,/dev/hdd does not contain the desired media)' on media 1 ----- I see no cd or dvd drives listed in My Computer either, but nothing has changed with the system since I did the install of 10.2. Any pointer welcome. Many thanks, Jim F -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Never mind. I burned another disk and it works fine now. Not sure how I got 10.2 installed off the 1st disk if it was bad, but all is well now. Many thanks, Jim F -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Should a DVD burned from the on-line ISO image pass the Media Check function in YaST? I verified the MD5 checksum of the downloaded .iso file, but the disc (from which I successfully installed 10.2) now does not pass the Media Check when run from that installed system. It fails within the first few percent of the start.
Many thanks,
Jim F

I think so I have more and more writing problems with cd or dvd, maybe the quality is lowering... jdd -- http://www.dodin.net Le manuel d'optique de Lucien Dodin http://lesprismes.free.fr/optique/index.html -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Definition of maximum burning speed is valid for certain combination of raw media and drives, but I haven't found references in manuals for drives or on CD/DVD media lables. I would use slower burning speed than declared maximum. Something around 1/2 of maximum gives good results here and time used to burn is still short enough. I have no more coasters burned from valid iso files. -- Regards, Rajko. http://en.opensuse.org/Portal -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Or your drive is going bad. I recently had a DVD+RW drive go flaky on me after a few years of use. Writing got more and more unreliable, both on CDs and DVDs. I was burning a lot of coasters, even on media from the same spindles I'd successfully used in the past. I haven't worked out whether it's dying or just dirty...I saw a DVD+/-RW burner at my favorite surplus store and bought that, instead. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Both drives and blank media are dropping rapidly in price. Sooner or later, quality will suffer. I have had some bad blank disks. When I burn a CD or DVD, I enable verify, so that I can tell if the disk was burned properly or not. So, when I create a SUSE CD or DVD from ISO, I 1) verify md5sum 2) verify on burn 3) verify in Yast Even then, I occasionally get a disk that passes the above and then goes bad later. Also a poor quality or out of spec drive will create disks that are not usable in other drives. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's the problem I had. I burned the new one at 2x. It passes the Media Check. Jim F -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

A disk created from an ISO file should pass the media check. If the ISO file passes the md5sum test, the problem is with the disk creation. This could be due to either the blank media or problems with the drive. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
