setup of D-Link ISA network card DE-220PCT
Hello! As setting up a "tulip" PCI network card was very easy, I can't figure out how to configure a D-Link ISA network card DE-220PCT. I tried to load the ne2000 / ne1000 (ISA) module but it doesn't seem to work. Please help as I can't go much further without network (cable net connection)! Thank you in advance! Patrick

According to SuSE Hardware Database a whole bunch of D-Link 220 cards are supported by the kernel, but DE-220 PCT isn't specifically mentioned. I remember, that it was reported about one of them, that it didnt work, probably because it was damaged. I have tried to set up such a card (rev D2), but couldn't make it work. Pnpdump gave no information, and I tried with the ne2k-diag tool, but could not get anyt usefull information from that either. So I wonder if it is supported at all. -- Regards Vagn Bjørno Jensen

Must be another of the the cards, because this one's definitely supported - I've got two of them in this machine. I used the 'ne' module. It helps to specify the io and irq of the cards. You may have to use the DOS utility that comes with the card for this. Kernel ISAPNP worked for me for this 2.4.3 kernel (although only on the first card). Did you set the card to non-pnp and manually assign resources? Can you please give details on what is required for specifying io and irq and for settings in modules.conf?

It's been so long... I used the DOS utility on at least one of them. For the past however many months I've been using append parameters with the kernel to specify IO and IRQs for both cards. The new 2.4.3 kernel which I installed yesterday uses ISAPNP on one of the cards and I have to manually set up the other, but I'll sort that later (shouldn't be too much trouble). You can specify parameters on the command line by typing something like: modprobe ne io=0x300 irq=3 You could also put the following lines in /etc/modules.conf: alias eth0 ne options ne io=0x300 irq=3 Bye, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\

I have that card too and was having the same problems 2 months ago. I finally gave up and replaced it with another brand of card. In researching the problem I remember reading somewhere that there was a common problem with net cards (I think specifically ISA) because of the pnp feature where cards could also be configured by a dos utility. I think that I had read that this feature can confuse the pnp detection. I tried using the dos utility to manually configure the card settings but it didn't work because I didn't know how to manually set up the module.
If anyone knows how to set up this card manually in Linux, then I think you could get this to work. Damon Register
