[SLE] SUSE 6.3 on large IDE disk: problem
Hi list, I'm using a 20GB IDE harddisk and I want to use WinME , Win2000 Server and Suse in that disk. But when I install Suse on the end of the disk , it cannot boot (it says that it reach 1024 cilynder limit ) .So I have to put Suse on the 2nd partition ,but still have problem : Partition Magic 5.0 cannot run , it always crashed and the partions follow by Suse are erased. So my question is : Can we have something that overcome the "1024 cylinder" limit ??? You should upgrade your distro to 7 just to be safe. Yeah, but unfortunately the version of LILO in SuSE 7 doesn't seem to be recent enough to include this change. It's pretty simple to install it from source, though ... Thank you for the info. I thought that since 7.0 came out way after the version of LILO that broke the limit, it would have be included. John> It's pretty simple to install it from source, though ... It is, but the originally poster was doing a fresh install from CD. I guess he would have to repartition and reinstall all of his OS's. Or maybe he could try using the NT boot loader. You have two options here: 1. Make a small /boot partition below the 1024th cylinder (what I do) 2. Get the latest version of LILO (21.5.1) from: http://freshmeat.net/projects/lilo/download/ To be able to use LILO in this mode, you'll need a BIOS which support EDD packet call extensions to the int 0x13 interface, and you also have to use the -L switch when calling LILO.
