[opensuse] Q: Start MATE Instead of KDE-Plasma
Hi ! I have installed MATE (along with KDE-Plasma), and now would like to auto-start MATE. sysconfig -> Window manager -> Default_WM - marco instead of kde-plasma sysconfig -> Display manager -> DISPLAYMANAGER -> sddm However, I'm still booted into KDE. What to do else to start MATE instead of KDE ? Thanks in advance. Andrei -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You do not say what openSUSE release you are using. If it is Tumbleweed, this does no longer work. Instead, you have to use update-alternatives. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

That only works in Tumbleweed, and perhaps on Leap 15. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Then it should generate instructions although I use kdm's login screen to switch desktops and if I shutdown from xfce for instance I get booted into xfce the next start up. Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Changing display manager has nothing to do with changing the desktop. I don't change display managers only switch gui's in (sorry sddm not kdm) sddm. I don't use any other display manager. Dave P

But the entry edited in sysconfig only changes the display manager. See the OP: On Sun, 31 Dec 2017 01:09:47 +0200 Andrei V <> Wrote:

To change the GUI simply select or enter your name in display manager menu, then select GUI, then enter password. Next time the choice should be remembered. - -- Cheers Carlos E. R. Then it should work. If it doesn't, it must be a bug. Procedure: Log out from graphics. Log in text mode (ctrl-alt-f1) as root. run "init 3". Edit sysconfig. run init 5. log out of text mode and in graphics mode. ctrl-alt-f7. However, this procedure changes the display manager, NOT the desktop you use and start with. You change the desktop in the display manager menu (and no need to change the display manager, any should work). - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
