Packages being held back
When running apt-get, I get the message that the gaim and amarok packages are being held back. I don't see anything in my apt.conf file where this was specified. I want to update these package, so what should I be checking to remedy this? Thanks. -- Cheers, Trey Logic is a little bird, sitting in a tree; that smells *_____awful*. What errors are you getting exactly? Gaim can't really be installed unless you have the dvd: linux:~ # apt -s install gaim Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done The following packages have unmet dependencies: gaim: Depends: libgnutls.so.10 but it is not installable Depends: libgnutls.so.10(GNUTLS_REL_1_0) but it is not installable E: Broken packages http://www.suse.com/us/private/products/suse_linux/prof/packages_professiona... It's strange gnutls is not available via the gnome apt component (SUSE 9.1 supplementary gnome directory) as gnutls is not provided on the CDs. Just for the record I have gnome-2.6 installed There are no problems installing amarok: # apt install amarok Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done The following extra packages will be installed: sqlite The following NEW packages will be installed: amarok sqlite 0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 removed and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 1149kB/1312kB of archives. After unpacking 2777kB of additional disk space will be used. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Yes, I realize I've built gaim against gnutls where it used to be mozilla in the past. But it stopped working for me using mozilla libs at some point, and then I switched. Now the problem is there's no gnutls available (except for me of course ;), so the options are: 1) I remove the gaim package from my pub/people dir, since I've given it to the fine Ximian people to do a better job than me. 2) I leave it and people have the chance to use it with a self compiled gnutls. Opinions? -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogical, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. P. J.

Can you give a hint to the ximian folks to provide the gnutls package? It would make the supplementary/GNOME/update_for_9.1/applications/ directory complete, isn't it? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

If it was that simple, I would just provide it in pub/people/mmj. But there's some export/legal stuff with this being encryption and SUSE being an american company now. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogical, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. 1. Ximian already provide gnutls in their evolution-devel-snapshot directory 2. So does suse, on the 9.1 discs But could you please expand on your argument. The original reason I moved from red hat to suse all those years ago was that idiocy surrounding encryption. suse being a european company meant I could get everything nicely precompiled and didn't have to scan the web for things the way I had to with red hat. Are you saying I'm in the same situation again? Will I have to move on to some other distro now?

I wouldn't go this far yet. The whole Novell thing is still pretty new to us, and certainly was when 9.1 was getting done. We didn't want to take any chances, so it was played safe everywhere. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogical, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. I guess not, since gnutls is actually included in 9.1 (it's on the DVD, though it was left off the CDs). Oh well, it's ok for now I guess. I'll have something to look forward to in 9.2 then :)

Yes, the reason it was left off the CDs is that there's less room than on the DVD, and this is one of the differences.

It's in pub/people/mmj as soon as the sync is done. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogical, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. P. J.

It seems I've been making a foulup here. The gnutls package indeed is on the media, so I've added it to my pub/people dir as well, so it's there together with gaim.
