HI all... I'm trying to load 7.2 on to a Toshiba Satellite 220CS. After it has check the memory I get this: ################################ Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000 --- lots of numbers and then -- Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task! In Idle task - not syncing ################################ At this point it just stops and I have to do a hard reboot. Any ideas? Does this happen when you boot from CD or hard disk? Have you tried booting from the second CD? Hi Lenz et al... No, I used both the normal bootdisk and the i386 disk from CD#1. If it would help I can copy down all the numbers and email them to you. No, that should not required. Have you been able to install an older version of SuSE Linux on this system? Can you provide some more details about the hardware? What kind of CD-ROM driver does it have? Have you looked at http://www.linux-laptop.net/toshiba.html for hints? Hi LenZ et al I've got an old copy of monkey linux on it. It does not have a CDrom, I'm trying to do an NFS install over my home-net. It is a 133mhz PI with 16mb memory & a 1.3gb HD. I got it from a friend in Holland. It has W$98 in Dutch on it. The keyboard is the UK type. I'll look at the toshiba site tonight. Also I'll give an older SuSE a try toworrow. Thanks! -- Jim Hatridge ------------------------------------------------------ BayerWulf The Recycled Beowulf Project Looking for throw-away or obsolete computers and parts to recycle into a Linux super computer
Hi Jim, I had a similar problem with an old 486 PC - try entering: boot: linux text expert mem=16M at the boot: prompt That worked for me Tony At 18:59 18/09/2001 +0200, Jim Hatridge wrote:

As soon as LILO starts you get the "boot:" prompt and the system pauses for a few seconds before booting the kernel. Just type "linux text expert mem=16M" and hit return. On SuSE 7.2 you get the graphical boot screen and can type the same text in the text field at the bottom of the screen. M

HI Lenz et al.. I dug out an old 5.2 demo disk I have. I made a bootdisk with it, and it WORKED! NOW the problem is that I still need to do a NSF install and my network card is not listed. I have a Genius Land Pocket adaptor, this thing goes in the printer port. The Genius web site said that it's the same as a "Realtek Pocket adaptor with a RTL 8012 chip". On my 7.2 system YAST has a "At-lan-tec / Realtek Pocket adaptor" -- is this the same? Is there anyway I can add this driver to the 5.2 bootdisk so I can do an NFS install? Or will I have to do a hard disk install? Also is there anyway I can get 7.2 install on this monster? I looked at the toshiba web site that you wrote about and it was basicly about how to configure your system after it was installed.
