I tried to install SuSE8.2 on my Dell Laptop(8100 Inspiron with SuSE8.1) last day and when using the DVD the installation process stalls on "Evaluating package selection". When I used the ordinary CD's the install proceeded.
So what's up with the DVD? What's the point having the DVD if they don't work? I used the DVD for 7.3, 8.0, 8.1 and I have no intention to switch to CD's now... :-)
Cheers, Magnus

A lot of us have had this problem. What is interesting is that you have used the DVD in the past and it worked. The big question is - did you use the same DVD drive this time as you did previously? If not, my belief is that there is an issue with certain brands or models.
When I installed SuSE7.3 I had a Toshiba drive; which only worked for a month or so. I don't remember if I installed 8.0 before getting the new Samsung drive or not.
For 8.1 I bough the update version and DVD didn't work; failed with no packages found. So I used the CD's(later on I found http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/mlasars_8.1_dvdinstall.html and assumed DVD worked, but I never tried it. I guess it didn't work.) Tried the same thing for 8.2 but with no success.
Well, I guess using CD's is better that floppies :-)

Is this a DVD/CDRW combo drive? I had an 8.2 install that hung at the same place. Interestingly, I read last night someone with the same problem with an ftp install. Hmm.

True, but it is a shame to have a DVD drive and DVD disk, but have to use CDs. :-\

It's got to be something like that...models and brands, because I've a DVD drive I took from my sisters old Compaq and stuffed into my system and it works flawlessly.

I've seen that one too. A bug in the install process, reported, and blamed on drive firmware (not in MHO).

You can, AFTER CD install, switch install source to DVD and then use the DVD just fine.

That's the way I did it with 8.1... :-)
I noticed the 8.2 DVD includes more RPM's than the CD's... http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/pohletz_paketdiffs_82.html I might copy the darn DVD to my fileserver and do a network installation ...
hi all,
i had teh same issue with my Latitude c840 here (with the samsung combo DVD/CDRW).
It looks like the system detects the drive as cdrom only, but the system installation thinks different. My guess is a Suse issue + DVD/CDRW combo.
Anyway, i solved it with multiple steps. Basically, it involves switching to a console installation,
1) boot with the cdrom=/dev/hdb (check the syntax on suse's support db) 2) switch to console installation 3) force loading the ide-scsi drivers
That should work. Let me have a message back if it doesn't, so i will try repeating installation
