[opensuse] KDE 4.3rc1: Why 25% CPU used by Plasma-Desktop

Just sitting there, with nothing running on a Duel Core machine it chews up 23 to 33% of one CPU. Standard wall paper, nothing fancy going on, no dread dog in the background. Top shows Plasma-Desktop using >25% of one processor to show a static screen. I don't have an answer, but I had the same thing happen when I did the auto-online updates and Yast updated KDE and plasma. John Andersen wrote:

Apparently this is a known problem in Rc1: http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=62127 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I currently have 4.2.96 here, which advertises itself as RC2, and I don't see this issue. Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try temporarily disabling compositing/desktop effects (Shift+Alt+F12) and see if that stops it... -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au ===================================================

Any plasmoids on the desktop or panel? You could quit plasma-desktop, move the configs (~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*) and restart it. That should give you a clean config file which should not cause any CPU usage. I'm just updating to KDE:Factory, so if there is a bug in that snapshot, I'm going to encounter it soon. John, Dunno? Take a look at: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/opensuse/kde4+compiz-idle.jp... That shows a CPU load history for my laptop with KDE4 rc2 running with Compiz as well. Normal working load (that's when I'm typing, browsing, etc) is about 15%. (I've highlighted this in red for you) I also started ksnapshot and then let the box idle for 15 seconds or so before grabbing the screenshot to show you the "idle" demand on my system. It's about 2% (shown in blue). You definitely have something going on if your box is just sitting there and eating 20+% of your CPU. Things to check? Adobe (anything). Flash-plugin, etc. I have seen those firefox plugins eat 80% of my CPU before. Beyond that, someone else will have to offer ideas. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
