Weird: after the lightning strike in July, I replaced an HP printer with a duplicate. The original was never installed in Leap, so I figured it's HP, it ought to be easy. No such luck. It even gave me its IP address. Leap can't see it. But it can ping it. BUT! Windows can see it but can''t install it! Windows can ping it also. Two machines, same problem. BUT! I installed Mint on a laptop, and it automatically found the HP and prints to it happily. Same lan, same router, etc. What could be going on? Ideas? --doug

We told you, there was a thread about this recently, and you saw that thread, you posted once. YaST can not find network printers, it does not work. But it can install them fine, no problem. That's it.

I always get IP address of my printer via system-config-pronter.
I always manually config the printer using its own tiny LCD display and buttons and write the fixed IP address I want. Alternatively, I configure it via its own web page. In any case, as I write the fixed IP address it is going to have, I know what exact address it has. Of course, you have to know your router and know what IP range is reserved for fixed usage. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from oS Leap 15.2 x86_64 (Minas Tirith))

not even necessary, the dhcp manage this also, of course if the Ip is already used it's a problem, but not likely in a family network jdd -- http://dodin.org

Why not (automatically) was explained in that recent thread I mentioned. Of course, you can open the firewall ports needed in advance, yourself, using the firewall configuration tool. No, I don't remember right now what ports. Avahi, perhaps, needs be running. And some broadcasts. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from oS Leap 15.2 x86_64 (Minas Tirith))

I may prefer a command line but realistically trying to explain how to do this via CLI will turn Doug off. never the less, I'm not a Yast-user either, especially when it comes down to printers! Thanks to Apple, we've had a print subsystem - CUPS - for a few generations in SUSE, now. https://www.cups.org/ In absolute terms I prefer the flexibility of the USG SVR4 model, but this is what we've got. So: address CUPS directly. in your browser, access http://localhost:631 That gives you direct access to CUPS and to the REAL printer setup and management -- “Reality is so complex, we must move away from dogma, whether it’s conspiracy theories or free-market,” -- James Glattfelder. http://jth.ch/jbg

I've used HP printers on Linux for ~20 years, mostly networked. YaST/Printer/Print via Network/Connection Wizard/Access Network Printer/TCP Port/Look Up has always found the IP for me on an HP printer. The default port is 9100. "Select the printer manufacturer" and YaST will find the driver file and install into CUPS. Or if you prefer it can launch hplip to do the install. In hplip's "HP Device Manager", select Device/Setup device/Network - select Connection Type and hplip will locate the printer and do the install into CUPS. Installing the printer via YaST or CUPS but not hplip, will prevent exposing some printer management features only available in the hplip Device Manager. I've found it best to drop the firewall before installing the printer, and then make adjustments afterward. If the router does not support static addresses, it probably does allow for LAN IP assignment from the DHCP range, using the printer's MAC address. Both the hplip and hplip-hpijs packages should be installed first to get all the driver files; OpenPrintingPPDs-postscript or hplip-sane packages may be required, too. Note that the printer install may offer more than one .ppd file. Some printers like laserjets and business-inkjets have a built-in web server (or JetDirect), with a quite powerful management utility. Access in browser using IP address. --dg 15.2 & 15.3, Plasma

Yes I had similar results, however no exact matches. That is the wireless address my printer shows. Does this have anything to do with local ip addresses? I was hoping it would give a printer config page.....My router is an asus. mike

There is a way to connect USB printers, in which the printer is connected to a special USB socket in a router or access point, and this AP does the talking with the computers. Certainly. But you can convert an USB only printer to networked printer, by connecting the USB to a special gadget. And in that case, the web page would be that of the gadget, not the printer. Some routers have this facility; you simply connect the USB cable to an USB socket on the router, and then configure the router for this in its configuration page. https://www.amazon.com/Computer-Networking-Print-Servers/b?ie=UTF8&node=13983761 -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. I didn't buy it; it was just a feature of the router I had bought for another reason :-) I did not try it. It also had an ftp server, if you connected an USB disk instead. This one I tried.
