Assuming that heroinewarrior was a dot com rather than an org, I assume their intent was to eventually make money on the product.
Negative. 100% GPL software, written by an individual who got tired of MainActor. Not that the thought had never crossed his mind, but a commercial venture was never his intent. Look at the buttons! Who would *pay* to look at something that ugly all day? ;)
I doubt that concerns about warranty and liability tell the whole story given the number of other tools out there such as rippers, video editing tools, and burners.
These are the products he was concerned about. GPL-licensed software has come under attack for legal purposes; attacked by organizations like the RIAA, and people like Frauhauffer (I can't spell that name). He pulled Bc2k so that he would *not* be attacked, because he (as an individual) could not afford lawyers or lengthy court proceedings. He has a dayjob; Bc2k was simply his favorite toy.
It may have been as much as a business decision of risk versus rewards and maybe the market just simply wasn't there.
Market was great; sales were awesome; what more could an individual person giving away software need?
Following the link to Sourceforge, I wonder what the current developers are going to do as those folks have made an investment in time in building an open source application.
Again, `developer'; singular form of the noun. This guy is known far and wide for being an arrogant prick who refuses to work with anyone else aside from `stealing' code. I say `stealing' because the code he ripped is mostly GPL to start with, but he does not mention sources, though the lineage of the code itself is clearly visible. He wouldn't so much as take patches at times.
Finally, I wonder and maybe someone can answer, is Broadcast2000 in the 7.3 release of SuSE Professional? Still waiting for it to arrive here...
I've heard that it is. Most interesting would be the source RPM and what patches make it different from the standard tarball...the bare tarball never did like to compile. :) ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
